Meanwhile,inSyria,wherehundredsofthousandsofrefugees(難民)maybeforcedtoreturn
tounsafehomes,aUNhumanrightscoordinatorforSyriasaiddespondently(沮喪地)thathewas
nolongersurewhyhebotherstovideotapetheeffectsofbombing,sincenobodyeverpays
attention.Hewonderedwhatlevelofviolenceitwouldtaketomaketheworldcare.
Thereis,perhaps,nobetterwaytoappreciatethetragedyof21st-centuryglobalinequality
thanbywatchingabillionairespend$90mlaunchinga$100,000carintospace.
Musksaidhewantedtoparticipateinaspaceracebecause“racesareexciting“andthatwhile
strappinghiscartoarocketmaybe"sillyandfun...sillyandfunthingsareimportant”.Thus,
anyonewhomentionsthehugewastetheprojectinvolves,orthevarioussocialusestowhich
theseresourcescouldbeput,canbedismissedasakilljoy.
Butonedoesn'thavetohatefuntoquestionthejustificationforpursuingacostlynewspace
raceatexactlythismoment.Ifweexaminethesituationhonestly,itbecomeshardtodefenda
projectlikethis.
AmissiontoMarsdoesindeedsoundexciting,butit'simportanttohaveourpriorities
straight.First,perhapswecouldmakeitsothatachildnolongerdiesofmalariaeverytwo
minutes.OrwecouldtrytoaddressthelevelofpovertyinAlabamawhichhasbecomesoextreme
thattheUNinvestigatordidnotbelieveitcouldoccurinafirst-worldcountry.Perhapswhen
violence,povertyanddiseasearesolved,thenwecanheadforthestars.
ManymightthinkthatwhatElonMuskchoosestodowithhisbillionsisElonMusk's
businessalone.Ifhewantedtospendallhismoneyonmedicineforchildren,thatwouldbenice,
butifhe'dliketospenditmakingbigexplosionsandsendinghisconvertibleonamillion-mile
spacevoyage,that'shisright.
ButMuskisonlyrichenoughtoaffordthesemoney-consumingprojectsbecausewehave
allowedsocialinequalitiestoariseinthefirstplace.Ifwealthwereactuallydistributedfairlyin
thiscountry,nobodywouldbeinapositiontofundhisownprivatespaceprogram.
ElonMuskisright:sillyandfunthingsareimportant.Butsomeofthemareanindefensible

Butthereiscauseforconcern.Theinternethasmadedataabundant,all-presentandfarmore
valuable,changingthenatureofdataandcompetition.Googleinitiallyusedthedatacollected
fromuserstotargetadvertisingbetter.Butrecentlyithasdiscoveredthatdatacanbeturnedinto
newservices:translationandvisualrecognition,tobesoldtoothercompanies.Internetcompanies,
controlofdatagivesthemenormouspower.Sotheyhavea"God'seyeview”ofactivitiesintheir
ownmarketsandbeyond.
Thisnatureofdatamakestheantitrustmeasuresofthepastlessuseful.Breakingupfirms
likeGoogleintofivesmalloneswouldnotstopremakingthemselves:intime,oneofthemwould
becomegreatagain.Arethinkisrequired-andasanewapproachstartstobecomeapparent,two

Thefirstisthatantitrustauthoritiesneedtomovefromtheindustrialageintothe21stcentury.
