Anewstudyhasfoundthatachild'sreadingspeedcanbeimprovedbysimplyincreasingthespacebetween,
letterswithinapieceoftext.Theresearch,ledbyDrStevenStaggofAngliaRuskinUniversity(ARU),examined
thebenefitsofletterspacingandcolouredoverlays(顏色標(biāo)注)amongchildren.
Twogroupsofchildren,dyslexic(有閱讀障礙的)andnon-dyslexicchildren,wereaskedtoreadfourtexts

specificallymissedwords,addedwords,wrongwords,andpronunciation-aswellastheparticipants9readingtime.
Thestudydiscoveredthattestwithincreasedspacebetweenlettersprovidedabenefitforbothgroups.On
average,thedyslexiagroupshoweda13%increaseinreadingspeed,whilethegroupofnon-dyslexicchildren
showeda5%increase.Inadditiontoimprovingreadingspeed,italsoresultedinasignificantdeclineinthenumber
ofwordsmissedbythechildrenwithdyslexia.However,thestudyfoundthatcolouredoverlayshadnosignificant
impactonreadingspeedorthereductionoferrorsforeithergroup.
DrStagg,SeniorLecturerinPsychologyalARU,said:"Webelieveextra-largeletterspacingworksby
reducingwhatisknownasthe'crowdingeffect',whichcanhampertherecognitionoflettersandreducereading
speed.”
“Ourfindingsstronglysuggestthatteacherscanbeconfidentthatallchildrenwouldbehelpedbyincreased

medicalfield,forexample,itdetectedsignsofCOVID-19infectionbyapplyingFHEtoanalyzetheencryptedCT
scansofmorethan1,500people'slungs.InapaperpublishedinOctober2021,theteamusedFHEtocollectdata
frommultiplesourcesandpredictedtheeffectofcancertreatmentsortheprocessofHIVinfection,asinFellay's
case.
Workable,butstillslow:calculationsontheFHE-encrypteddatacouldtakemillionsoftimeslongerthanthose
onrawdata.But,asGoldwassersays,“Ifyoubelievethatsecurityisnotaplus,butit'samust,^^shesays,“thenin
somesensethereisnooverhead.^^
