.Shylockisnotonlydeprivedofhisfortunebutalsohisrighttohavehisownbelief.Whataheavyblowitistoamanofthatage!Materialpossessionsaresomethingthatamancanhaveorhavenot,butspiritualbeliefisalmostinseparable,especiallyinthosedays.InAct3Scene1,inalongandpassionatespeech,Shylockdeclaresthatthewillusetheflesh”tobaitfishwithal”ifnothingelse.Itwillfeedhisrevenge,forAntoniohasdisgracedhim,hinderedhisbusiness,laughedhislosses,mockedathisgains,scornedhisnation,thwartedhisbargains,cooledhisfriend,andheatedhisenemies.“Andwhat’shisreason?IamaJew.HathnotaJeweyes?HathnotJewhandsorgans,dimensions,senses,affections,passions?Fedwiththesamefood,hurtwiththesamemeans,warnedandcooledbythesamewinterandsummerasaChristianis?Ifyouprickus,dowenotbleed?Ifyoutickleus,dowenotlaugh?Andifyouwrongme,shallwenotrevenge?Ifwearelikeyouintherest,wewillresembleyouinthat.”Thisisoneofthemostinterestingspeechesintheplayandoneofthemostimportantproblematical.SomeofthemodernhistoricalcriticssupporttheviewthattheJewisessentiallynodifferentfromanyoneelse.ManyElizabethansbelievedasLancelotandsalvationdo,thattheJewwasthedevilimamate.EverythingthatShylocksaysinhisfamousexplanationofhismotiveselicitedthescornoftheRenaissanceChristian,whobelievedthathatredandrevengewereinherentJewishtraits.Intheflesh,JewandChristianmaybeverymuchalike.Inthespirit,intheirwayandmanners,theyareentirelydifferent.ThisistheverypointthatShylockmisses.
