WhileReadingLately,allofushaveseenChinesepeopleonTVinfar--off

placesintheworld,helpingothercountriestodevelop.WeseeChineseworkersbuildingroadsintheCongo,aportinPakistan,railwaysinPanama,andanairportinSriLanka.AndweseeChineseminers,oilworkers,agriculturalexperts,mechanics,anddoctorsworkinginnearlyeverycorneroftheworld.Andsomepeoplemayask,“Isitworthit?WhyhelppeopleoverseaswhenChinahasmanyareasthatarestillinneedofdevelopment?”Usearhetoricalquestiontobeginherspeech.Ihadthesamequestionsmyself.Butforme,itwasmuchmorepersonal.Yousee,mymotherisamedicaldoctor,andforthelasttwoyears,shehasbeenworkingasavolunteerconsultantinTanzania,Africa,asapartofamedicalteamsentbytheChinesegovernment.

Tobehonest,whenmymotherfirstleftforAfrica,Iwasupset.Mymothercookedmedinnereverynight,andshetookgoodcareofme.Butmoreimportantly,shewasmybestfriend.

Wetalkedtogether,wespentourleisuretimetogether,andexceptforschoolandwork,wewereneverapart.SoIwasunhappyaboutherleavingwithoutevenaskingformyinput.Useherpersonalexperiencestotellherfeelingsabouthermother'swork.ButthenIbegantohearabouttheworkshewasdoinginTanzania,acountrythathasmanyhealthproblems,andnowIamsingingadifferenttune.Manydangerousdiseaseswhichare

rareinChinaarequitecommonlycontractedinTanzania.And,whilethecountryisquitebeautifulandhasmuchnaturalwealth,manyofthepeoplearequitepoorandlivewithoutthingswetakeforgranted,suchaselectricity,runningwater,carsandgoodtransportsystems,andsupermarkets.Oneprojectthatmymotherworkedonwashelpingtobuildacardiachospital.Priorto

this,ifaTanzanianhadaheartconditionandneededsurgery,theywouldhavetogoabroad.Herfeelingschangedwhensheknewthedifferenceshermotherandthevolunteersmade.

Sincethiswasquiteexpensive,manypeoplewentwithoutmedicaltreatmentandsomeevendied.Now,notonlyareTanzanianshelpedbythehospital,butpeopleinneighboringcountriesarehelpedaswell.Ithasmadeabigdifferencetotheirlives.Mymotheralsodoesacircuitoftheruralvillagestoprovidemedicaltreatment,helpthosewithdisabilities,andprovideconsultationandtrainingforlocaldoctors.Inaddition,herteamhasgivenpatientsanewmalariatreatmentinventedinChina,andthishassavedmanylives.Today,IwanttorelaytoyouthatI'mproudoftheworkmymotherhasdone,andIamnowsupportiveofit.Isherworkworthit?Yes,tothelivesofthepeoplesheishelping,itisworthit.Butbyanycriteriathisworkisworthittousaswell,becauseitshowsthatweareglobalcitizensinterestedinworldstability,andthatwefeelresponsibleforothersandarereadytobuildacommunitywithasharedfutureformankind.Everyonedeservesafairchanceinlife.WhenIthinkofallthethingsthatweasChinesecitizenscanbemostproudof,helpingotherscomesatthetopofthislist.
