AlthoughJapanstartedthetrendwithitsShinkansen“BulletTrains”in1964,itwasthecomingofFrance’sTGVintheearly1980sthatreallypromotedaglobalhigh-speedtrainrevolutionthatcontinuedtospeedup.Chinahasbuiltaround42,000kilometersofhigh-speedrailwayssince2023andplanstotop70,000kilometersby2035.
ButtheUnitedStatesdetouredtherevolution.Fortherichandeconomicallysuccessfulnationontheplanet,withanincreasinglyurbanizedpopulationofmorethan300million,itisincreasinglydifficulttogiveagoodreason.Carsandairplaneshavedominatedlong-distancetravelintheUnitedStatessincethe1950s.NowAmericansstillalmostentirelydependoncrowdedhighwaysorairlinenetworksthatareeasytocollapse.

Inthefirststudy,bylookingatadatabaseof3millioncharitabledonationsbetween2023and2023,EtiBenSimon,MatthewWalkerandtheircolleaguessawa10%dropindonationsfollowingDaylightSavingTime(夏令時).Thisdropwasnotseeninstatesthatdon’tfollowtheone-hourforward,Inthesecondstudy,theresearcherslookedatthebrainactivityof24peopleaftereighthoursofsleepandafteranightofnosleep.Theareasofthebrainassociatedwiththeoryofmindwerelessactiveaftersleeploss,thisstudyfound.Inthethirdstudy,whichmeasuredthesleepofmorethan100peopleacrossthreetofournights,researchersunexpectedlyfoundthatsleepquantityandqualitybothtypicallyinfluencedemotionalandsocialbehavior.“Thesefindingscouldsuggestthatoncesleeptimerisesabovesomebasicamount,sleepqualityisthemostcriticalfactorthatinfluencesdesiretohelpotherpeople,”Dr.IvanaRosenzweig,asleepphysiciansaid.
