InternationalGeneralofSecondaryMARKSCHEMEfortheMay/June2012questionpaperfortheguidanceofteachers05470547(FOREIGNPaper2(ReadingandDirectedWriting),umrawmark65Thismarkschemeispublishedasanaidtoteachersandcandidates,toindicatetherequirementsoftheexamination.ItshowsthebasisonwhichExaminerswereinstructedtoawardmarks.ItdoesnotindicatethedetailsofthediscussionsthattookceatanExaminers’meetingbeforemarkingbegan,whichwouldhaveconsideredtheacceptabilityofalternativeanswers.MarkschemesmustbereadinconjunctionwiththequestionpapersandthereportontheCambridgeispublishingthemarkschemesfortheMay/June2012questionpapersformostIGCSE,GCEAdvancedLevelandAdvancedSubsidiaryLevelsyllabusesandsomeOrdinaryLevelGeneralMarkingPleasenotethatitisnotpossibletolistallacceptablealternativesintheDetailedMarkSchemeprovidedinSection2.Youwillneedtoconsiderallalternativeanswersandunexpectedapproachesincandidates’scripts,makeadecisiononwhethertheycommunicatetherequiredelements,inconsultationwithyourPrincipalExaminerifnecessary(orwithyourProductManagerifyouareasingleExaminer),andawardmarksThefollowingmarkingprinciplesunderpinthedetailedinstructionsprovidedinSection2oftheMarkScheme.Whereadecisionistakentodeviatefromtheseprinciplesforaparticularquestion,thiswillbespecifiedintheMarkScheme.CrossingIfacandidatechangeshis/hermindoverananswerandcrossesoutanattempt,awardamarkifthefinalattemptiscorrect.Ifacandidatecrossesoutananswertoawholequestionbutmakesnosecondattemptatit,markthecrossedoutwork.Readingtasks:morethanthestipulatednumberofboxesticked/crossedbytheIfmorethanoneattemptisvisible,butthecandidatehasclearlyindicatedwhichattemptishis/herfinalanswer(e.g.bycrossingoutotherattemptsorbyannotatingthescriptinsomeway),markintheusualway.Iftwoattemptsarevisible(e.g.twoboxestickedinsteadofthe1boxstipulated),andneitherhasbeencrossedout/discountedbythecandidate,nomarkcanbeawarded.Readingtasks:forquestionsrequiringmorethanoneelementfortheanswer,(i)and(ii),wheretheanswersareinterchangeable:Bothcorrectanswersonline1andline2blank=2Bothcorrectanswersonline1andline2wrong=1(orvice-versa)Readingtasks:answersrequiringtheuseof(ratherthananon-verbalresponse)shouldbemarkedforcommunication.Tolerateinaccuraciesprovidedthemessageisclear.‘Ifindoubt,sounditout’:ifyoureadwhatthecandidatehaswritten,doesitsoundlikecorrectAccept unlessMarkSchemespecifiesAcceptincorrectpossessiveadjectivesunlessMarkSchemespecifiesotherwise(ingeneral,Section2accept,Section3consultMarkSchemecarefully).UnlesstheMarkSchemespecifiesotherwise,donotacceptincorrectifthewordgivenmeanssomethingelsein.(Incorrectwhichconstitutesawordinanylanguageotherthanismarked(i)onthebasisofwhetheritisacceptedorrefusedintheMarkSchemeand(ii)ifnotmentionedintheMarkScheme,onthebasisof2.5above).AnnotationusedintheMarkINV=Invalidationandisusedwhenadditionalmaterialincludedbythecandidateisjudgedtoinvalidateanotherwisecorrectanswerthuspreventinghim/herfromscoringthemark(INV=0).tc=‘toutcourt’andmeansthatonitsownthematerialisnotsufficienttoscoretheHA=harmlessadditionalmaterialwhichinconjunctionwiththecorrectanswerdoesnotpreventthecandidatefromscoringthemark.BOD=BenefitoftheDoubtandisusedtoindicatematerialconsideredbytheExaminerandjudgedtobemorecorrectthanincorrect:thebenefitofthedoubtisgiventothecandidateandthemarkisawarded.Noresponseand‘0’marksAwardNR(NoIfthereisnothingwrittenatallintheanswerspaceIfthereisonlyacommentwhichdoesnotinanywayrelatetothequestionbeingasked(e.g.‘can’tdo’or‘don’tknow’)orIfthereisonlyamarkwhichisn’tanattemptatthequestion(e.g.adash,aquestionAwardIfthereisanyattemptthatearnsnocredit.Thiscould,forexample,includethecandidatecopyingallorsomeofthequestion,oranyworkingthatdoesnotearnanymarks,whethercrossedoutorExtramaterial:Section2,ExerciseInSection2,Exercise1,rewardthecandidateforbeingabletolocatetheanswerinthepassage.Donotworryaboutliftingunlessthiswouldcausethemessagetobeseriouslydistorted(ingeneral,incorrectpossessivesshouldnotbejudgedtocausedistortion:see2.5(d))–inwhichcasealiftwillbespecificallyrejectedintheMarkScheme.IgnoreextramaterialgiveninananswerprovidingthatitdoesnotinvalidateanExtramaterial:SectionInSection3itisthecandidate’sresponsibilitytoanswerquestionsinsuchawayastodemonstratetotheExaminerthats/hehasunderstoodthetexts/questions.Wherecandidatesintroduceextra,irrelevantmaterialtoanotherwisecorrectanswerthedangeristhattheExaminerisbeingdto‘choose’thecorrectanswerands/hecannotbecertainthatthecandidatehasshownunderstanding.WheretheExaminerisputinthispositionthemarkcannotbeawarded.InSection3,lookforsignsofgenuinecomprehension.Usually,candidateswholiftindiscriminayfailtodemonstratecomprehensionandwillnotscorethemark.However,carefulliftingofthedetailsrequiredtoanswerthequestiondoesdemonstratecomprehensionandshouldberewarded.TheDetailedMarkSchemeprovidesspecificguidancebutincasesnotcovered,thefollowinggeneralrulesapply:intheMarkScheme,whichreinsthecorrectanswerorinitselfconstitutesanalternativecorrectanswer:thisisacceptableandisnotExtramaterialwhichconstitutesanalternativeanswer,butwhichisnotexplicitlymentionedintheMarkScheme:theExaminerneedstodecide,byconsultingthetextandtheTeamLeaderifnecessarywhetherthealternativeansweranalternativecorrectanswer,inwhichcasethisfallsintocategory(a)andtheanswershouldberewardedorananswerwhichonitsownwouldberefused,inwhichcasethisfallsintocategory(c)andtheanswershouldberefusedExtramaterialwhichanswerspecificallyrefusedintheMarkthisputstheExaminerinthepositionofhavingto‘choose’whichisthecandidate’s‘final’answer–theExaminercannotbesurewhatthecandidatehasunderstood–andthemarkcannotbeExtramaterialwhichcorrectanswer:thisaffectscommunication–theExaminercannotbesurewhatthecandidatehasunderstood–andthemarkcannotbebythecandidateandwhichdoesnotfeatureinthetext:thisaffectscommunication–theExaminercannotbesurewhatthecandidatehasunderstood–andthemarkcannotbeawarded.Itcansometimesbedifficulttodrawthelinebetweenwhatisadeductionmadebyanablecandidateonthebasisofwhattheyhavereadandpureguesswork.ThereforewhereananswerofthissortoccurswhichisnotcoveredintheMarkScheme,ExaminersshouldconsulttheirTeamLeaderDetailedMarkSchemeSectionOneExercise1Questions
