Theneighborhoodchildrenmyageplayedtogether:eitheractive,physicalgames

outdoorsorgamesofdolls-and-houseindoors.I,ontheotherhand,spentmuchofmy

childhoodalone.Iwouldcurlupinachairreadingfairytalesandmyths,daydreaming,

writingpoemsorstoriesanddrawingpictures.Sometimearoundthefourthgrade,my

“big”(oftencritical,judgmental)Grandma,whowouldbeenvisitingussaidtome,

“Whatiswrongwithyou!Whydon’ttheotherchildrenwanttoplaywithyou?”I

rememberbeingstartledandconfusedbyherquestion.Iwouldneverbeen

particularlyinterestedinplayingwiththeotherchildren.Ithadnot,tillthen,occurred

tomethatthatwaseitheroddorsomethingwrongwithme.Norhaditoccurredtome

thattheydidnot“wanttoplaywith”me.Myfirstconsciousmemoryoffeeling

differentwasinthefourthgrade.Atthewardrobe,listeningtoclassmatesjoking,

chatteringandlaughingwitheachother,IrealizedIhadnotaclueaboutwhatwasso

funnyorofhowtoparticipateintheireasychatter.Theyseemedtoliveinauniverse

aboutwhichIknewnothingatall.Itriedtoactlikeothersbutitwassodifficult.Ifelt

confusedanddisoriented.Iturnedbacktomyinnerworld:readingbooks,writingand

daydreaming.Myinwardnessgrewmeinwaysthatcontinuedtomovemefurther

awayfromtheworldofmyagepeers.Theeasyflowofcasualsocialchathas

remainedforeverbeyondmyreachandbeyondmyinterest,too.

Everybodycheats.Whetherit'sthetaxidriverwhotricksavisitorandtakeshim

thelongwayround,ortheshopassistantwhodoesn'tgivethecorrectchange,or

thepoliceofficerwhoacceptsabride-everybody'satit.Cheatsinthenews

includethescientistwhoseresearchwasbasedonfakedata,thegameshow

contestantwhocollaboratedwithafriendintheaudiencetowinamillion

pounds,andthedoctorwhoforgedhisqualificationsandwasn'treallyadoctor

atall.Everybodycheats;nobody'splayingthegame.

Ischeatingacceptable,anaturalwayofsurvivingandbeingsuccessful?Or

isitsomethingthatshouldbefrownedon,andyoungpeoplediscouragedfrom

doing?Ifit'sthelatter,howcanweexplaintochildrenwhysomanybendthe

rules?

aspadayisshefeelsguiltyforspendingfamilymoneyonherself.

Gosh,youallhavesuchhecticlives.I’mdizzyjusthearingyourdailyactivities.I

guessIhaveitnice.Ihavenoscheduleatall!IgetupwhenIwant.Iworkmy

businesswhenIwant.IshopwhenIwantto.IwashmyhairwhenIbatheorIdon’t

washmyhair.WhenIgotoworkallIhavetodoisopenupmyofficedoorinmy

houseandI’matworkalready.Notraffictodealwithandtherecanbe10feetof

snowonthegroundandIwouldn’thavetowalkaninchofitbecausemyhouse

connectsdirectlytomywarehouse!IfIgetupanddon’tfeellikeworkingIdon’t.

ItookmyfirstdrinkandsmokedmyfirstmarijuanacigarettewhenIwas12

cocainewouldcompletelycuremeofanydesireforit,butwhenIgotbackintown

twoyearslater,Istartedusingitagainonlyfivedayslater.Everypartofmylifewas

messedup.Iremembermyoldestsonbeingembarrassedtobeseenwithme.He

wouldpassmeonthestreetwithhisfriendsbuthewouldn’tevenspeaktome.The

bottomcameformewhenIwasfinallyevictedfrommyapartment.Ilostmycarmy

car,myhomeandmysons.Ilookedinthemirrorthatday,andIcouldn’tlookmyself

intheeyes.Thenextmorning,Ishowedupatthetreatmentcenter.Thefirstfewdays

ofdetoxandtreatmentwerehard,butIwasconvincedthatIneededhelp,soIstayed.

trouble.

Evenso,thereisstillreasonforhope,manyorganizationsareworkinghardto

strengthenfamilies.Americanalmostunanimouslybelievethatthefamilyisoneof

themostimportantpartsoflife.Theyrealizethatproblemsinfamilylifeinrecent

yearshavebroughtseriousconsequences.Asaresult,moreandmorepeopleare

makingtheirfamilyapriority.Manywomenarequittingtheirjobstostayhomewith
