Thenovel"TheOldManandtheSea"isbasedonrealpeopleandtrueevents.AftertheendofWorldWarOne,HemingwaymovedtoCuba(古巴)andmettheoldmanFishermanGorioFuentes.In1930,HemingwaywasrescuedbyFuentesafterhisshipwaswreckedinastorm.Fromthenon,thetwomenforgedprofoundfriendship,oftenwithfishing.In1936,Fuenteswentfarouttoseaandcaughtabigfish,butbecausethefishwastoobig,itwasdraggedatseaforalongtime,andtheresultwasthaitwasattackedbyasharkonthewayhome,onlytheskeletonwasleftwhenhereturned.Hemingwaywasdeeplytouchedbythisincidentandrealizedthatitwouldbegoodmaterialforanovel.In1950,hewroteanovelonit,whichwonhimthePulitzerPrizein1953andin1954wonhimtheNobelPrizeforLiterature.

"TheOldManandtheSea"writesthattheoldCubanfishermanSantiagohasfinallycaughtabigmarlinfishaloneafter84consecutive(連續(xù)的)dayswithoutcatchingafish.Butthisfishwassobigthathedraggedhisboatouttoseaforthreedaysbeforehewasexhausted,andhewaskilledandtiedtothesideoftheboatonhiswayhome.Repeatedlyattackedbysharks,andfinallyreturnedtoportwithonlyafishheadandtailandaspine(骨架).

ErnestHemingway(1899-1961)wasanAmericanjournalist,writer,andsportsman.Afterhighschool,hewasajournalistbeforeenlistingasanambulancedriverintheFirstWorldWar.Hewasseriouslywoundedandreturnedhomein1918.Hisexperiencesofwarformedhisnovel,AFarewelltoArms(1929).Hisfirstnovel,TheSunAlsoRises,waspublishedin1926.HewaslaterajourmalistduringtheSpanishCivilWar,writingForWhomtheBellTollsbasedonhisexperience.

Hemingwaysufferedfromincreasingphysicalandmentalproblems.OnJuly2,1961,HemingwayshothimselfwithashotgunathishomeinKetchum,Idaho,attheageof62.

Hemingway'sfeelingsarecomplicatedinhislife,Heistherepresentativefigureofthe"LostGeneration(迷惘的一代)"writersintheUnitedStates,andhisworksshowconfusionandhesitationaboutlife,theworldandsociety.Hehasalwaysbeenknownasatoughmanintheliteraryworld,heisthespiritualmonumentoftheAmericannation.Hemingway'sworksmarktheformationofhisuniquewritingstyleandoccupyanimportantpositioninthehistoryofAmericanliteratureandeventheworldliterature.
