KeiskammaArtProjectwascreatedtoteachlocalwomenembroidery(刺繡)skillstohelpthematatoughtimeeconomicallyandsocially,butunexpectedlyithasgrownintosomethingmuchbigger.Havingbeenshownatinternationalartgalleries,manyoftheirtapestries(掛毯)arenowbeingdisplayedunderoneroofforthefirsttime,atanexhibitioninJohannesburg.

Theirstorybeganin2000,whenDr.CarolHofmeyrmovedfromJohannesburgtoHamburg.

Shefoundthatthetownwasstrugglingwithhighunemploymentandthatlocalwomenweredesperatetofindwaystofeedtheirfamilies.Havingstudiedembroideryherself,shehopedthatpassingonthatknowledgetolocalwomenwouldhelpempowerthem.

Fromhumblebeginnings,moreandmorewomenheardabouttheprojectthroughwordofmouth.Now,over150womenarepartoftheproject.Sellingtheirworksprovidesasourceofincome,buttheprojecthasalsocreatedasupportsystemforthewomen.

Initially,thewomenstartedoutsimplycreatingcushions(坐墊)andsmallhandbagstoselltotourists.Eventually,theystartedreceivingtasksforlargerpieces.Theyweregivenpanelsaboutameterinsizetoworkonathome.Byjoiningthecompletedpanelstogether,theycreatedthefirstoftheirlargeworksandoneoftheirmostcelebrated,“TheKeiskammaTapestry",whichtellsthehistoryoftheXhosapeoplewhoweresubjugated(征服)throughcolonizationandtheXhosaBritishFrontierWarsfrom1776to1876.
