"Youalarmme!"repliedtheRoseTree."Ineverthoughtofthatatall."

"Butmustwenotall,hereonearth,givetoothersthebestthatwehave,andofferwhatliesinourpower?CertainlyIhaveonlygivenroses.Butyou―youwhohavebeensorichlygifted―whathaveyougiventotheworld?whatdoyouintendtogive?"

“等著我的好時(shí)光吧!”他說(shuō)，“我要做的事業(yè)，可比開(kāi)花或者結(jié)果要強(qiáng)，也比那些牛羊產(chǎn)奶要強(qiáng)!”

“我期待著你成就大事業(yè)，”玫瑰樹(shù)說(shuō)，“但我可以問(wèn)問(wèn)，那是什么時(shí)候的事呢?”

“我能把握我的時(shí)間，”蝸牛答道，“你總是匆匆忙忙的，不懂怎么搞點(diǎn)懸念，吊吊人們的胃口?！?/p>

第二年，蝸牛幾乎還在老地方，躺在透過(guò)玫瑰樹(shù)射過(guò)來(lái)的陽(yáng)光里。玫瑰樹(shù)長(zhǎng)出花苞，開(kāi)出了玫瑰花兒，花兒總是那么清新。蝸牛從地上爬出一半身子，伸了一下觸角，然后又縮了回去。

“―切還都像去年―樣，沒(méi)有什么變化。玫瑰樹(shù)還是開(kāi)著玫瑰花兒，我看也就這樣了。”

夏季過(guò)去了，秋天來(lái)臨。玫瑰樹(shù)總是開(kāi)花，又冒出新的花骨朵兒，直到雪花飄落下來(lái)，天氣變得陰濕寒冷。玫瑰樹(shù)低下它的頭，蝸牛又爬回了地下。

新的一年又開(kāi)始了，玫瑰花開(kāi)放，蝸牛也爬了出來(lái)。

“你現(xiàn)在是一棵老玫瑰樹(shù)了!”蝸牛說(shuō)，“你得抓緊點(diǎn)，你很快就會(huì)走到生命的盡頭，因?yàn)槟惆炎约旱乃腥冀o了這個(gè)世界。這倒底有沒(méi)有用，我也沒(méi)有時(shí)間去考慮，但有一點(diǎn)是十分清楚明白的，那就是你沒(méi)有為自己的發(fā)展做過(guò)什么努力。不然的話(huà)，你還能長(zhǎng)出點(diǎn)別的什么東西來(lái)。你對(duì)此怎么解釋?不久，你就什么也不是啦，只會(huì)成為一根樹(shù)棍。你明白我說(shuō)的話(huà)嗎？”

“別嚇唬我!”玫瑰樹(shù)答道，“我從不考慮這些事情?！?/p>

“是啊，你從沒(méi)有費(fèi)心考慮過(guò)什么事情。你曾經(jīng)考慮過(guò)嗎，你為什么要開(kāi)花，你的花兒是怎么開(kāi)出來(lái)的――為什么是這樣，而不是別樣呢？”

“沒(méi)有，”玫瑰樹(shù)答道，“我在快樂(lè)中開(kāi)花，因?yàn)槲也荒苋プ鰟e的事情。太陽(yáng)那么溫暖，空氣那么清新。我喝著純凈的露水和清新的雨水，我生長(zhǎng)，我呼吸。下面的土地給了我力量，上面的天空給了我生機(jī)。我感受到一種新的、不斷成長(zhǎng)的快樂(lè)，因此我就一次次地開(kāi)花。那就是我的生活，我別無(wú)選擇?！?/p>

“你倒是過(guò)得挺快活的，”蝸牛說(shuō)。

“當(dāng)然啦，我得到了一切，”玫瑰樹(shù)說(shuō)，“但你得到的東西更多。你是那種善于沉思的人，屬于天賦很高的一類(lèi)，能讓全世界為之驚嘆?！?/p>

“我可沒(méi)想去做那種事，”蝸牛叫道，“世界對(duì)我來(lái)說(shuō)不值一提。我跟世界有什么關(guān)系?我自己的東西，我身體擁有的一切，就足夠了?！?/p>
