TheCommissures

Whatarethey?

Thecommissuresarefibretractsconnectingthetwohemispheres.Thereisaposteriorcommissure,whichconnectsmidbrainanddiencephalonstructures,andliesjustinfrontofandabovethesuperiorcolliculi,belowthepinealgland.Theposteriorcommissureisnotalwayseasytoseeonahighdetailedstructuralscan,anditisveryunlikelyyouwillbeabletodiscernitonfunctionalimages.Theanteriorcommissure(AC)connectsthemiddleandinferiortemporalgyriofthetwohemispheres,andrunsacrossthemidlinejustinfrontofthefornix.Itisrelativelyeasytoseeonmoststructuralscans.

Whythecommissures?

ThecommissurehavebecomekeyIandmarks,becauseTalairachandTournouxchosethemtodeterminethestandardalignmentofthebrainfortheirfamousatlas.ToalignascantoTalairachspace,abrainhastobesetsothattheanteriorandposteriorcommissuresareonahorizonatalline.

TheACisbestseenonslice91inX,131inYand67inZoftheiconicbrainimage.

BelowisanimageshowingthePConthesamebrain,againatthe(truncated)intersectionoftheredlines.ThePCcanbestbeseenatslicesX91,Y103andZ70.NotethatthisbrainisnotexactlyorientedaccordingtotheTalairachsystem,asthetwocommissuresarenotonthesameaxialplane.

ItmaybeusefultoscrollthroughtheiconicbrainimageprovidedwithMRIcroorMRIcroGL,togetusedtotheIandmarksaroundthecommissures.

HereisthepositionoftheanteriorcommissureontheMNI152averagebrain;firstonthetheT1average:

andnextontheT2average(whichismoresimilartoEPIimages).

Specifyingthecommissuresonlowresolutionimages,suchasfunctionalimages,requiresalittleguesswork,combinedwithaknowledgeofwherethecommissuresareinrelationtoanatomythatyoucansee,suchasthethalamus,brainstem,andcorpuscallosum.
