UnlockingtheMindsofExceptionalLeadersReallifeinsightsforsuccess.KEYPOINTSMindsetsarebeliefsthatorientthewaywehandlesituations,buttendtoremainhidden.Aleader'smindsetisthecornerstoneofeffectiveleadership,shapingdecisionmakingandteamdynamics.Effectiveleadersareshapedbydiversemindsetsthataidthemininfluencingothers.Inthevastworldofbusiness,beingatrueleadergoesbeyondjobtitlesandlookingauthoritative.It'smorethanwhatyou'vestudied,whatyouwear,orhowmanypeopleworkunderyou.Atrueleaderisanagentofchange,someonewhodrivesresults,influencesothers,andshapesthefuture.Researchhighlightsthepivotalimportanceofunderstandingthatyourthoughtprocessisthekeystoneofyoursuccess.Mindsetsactasthementallensesthroughwhichleadersperceiveandmakesenseoftheworldaroundthem.Inessence,theydefinewhatleadersdoandwhytheydoit.Therefore,thisleadershipserieswillfeatureinsightfulconversationswithchangemakershailingfromdiverseindustriesacrosstheglobe,sheddinglightonthetypeofmindsettheyholdthatdrivestheirsuccess.InPart1,wedelveintotheinsightsofleadersinhealthcare,advertising,professionalservices,andvariousothersectors.WhyDoesMindsetMatterinLeadership?Accordingtoexperts,mindsetsarebeliefsthatorientthewaywehandlesituationsbuttypicallyremainhidden(Dweck,2017;Klein,2017).Aleader'smindsetinfluencestheirapproachtoproblemsolving,thewaytheyinteractwiththeirteam,andtheirabilitytoadapttochangingcircumstances.Inessence,theleader'smindsetisthefoundationuponwhicheffectiveleadershipisbuilt.WhatTypesofMindsetsAreThere?WhileCarolDweck(2017)hasproposedthepopularideathatindividualscanhaveeitherafixedoragrowthmindset,othershaveindicatedthemultifacetednatureofmindsets(Rucker&Galinksy,2016).Forinstance,in2017,SkylineGroup’sOrganizationalIntelligenceInstitutesurveyedmorethan600maleandfemaleleaderstoexplorehowmindsetinfluencesbothperceptionandbehaviors.Resultsidentified15mindsetcontinuumsrelatedtothemonrolesandattributesofleaders,suchasproblemsolving,goalorientation,growth,andfocus.Forthisseries,weinterviewedleaderstodeterminewhichmindsetstheyheldtoinfluencechangeintheirindustryandfoundthattheirresponsesfellwithinoneormoreofthese15mindsetcontinuums.Let'sexploreasubsetofcontinuumsthatparticularlycaughtourattention.1.PerformanceMindsetThismindsetreferstoanindividual'sapproachtotasksandgoals,characterizedbyafocusonachievingexcellence,continuousimprovement,andmeasurableresults.LisaFilkins,ahighlyexperiencedvicepresidentofhumanresourceswithover25yearsinthefield,embodiesthismindsetthroughherunwaveringdedicationtodatadrivendecisionmaking.Shefirmlybelievesthatharnessingmetricsisessentialforenhancingorganizationalperformance.Researchalsosupportsthis,asstudieshaveshownthatleaderswhoprioritizedatatendtoexcelinmakinginformeddecisionsandsteeringtheirteamstowardsuccess(Webber&Zheng,2020).Thismindset,oftenintertwinedwithasinceredesiretomakeadifference,empowersleaderstoharnessthepowerofmetricsandanalyticsforeffectivedecisionmaking.SteveMiranda,anacplishedexecutive,echoesthesesentiments.Stevesharesthesamepassionandismotivatedbytheachievementoftangibleresults.Hismindsetalignswiththepursuitofexcellence,firmlybelievingthat"weshouldleavethingsbetterthanwefoundthem,"aprinciplehehashelddearthroughouthismanyyearsofleadingteamstoeffectivelyachieveplexorganizationalobjectives.2.PurposeDrivenMindsetThismindsetinvolvesaligningyouractionsanddecisionswithameaningfulmissionorcorevalues.ZacharyNunn,theCEOofadigitalmedianetwork,highlightstheprofoundsignificanceofstayingmittedtoone'smissionandpurpose.Healsoemphasizedtheimportanceofmaintainingclearboundaries,especiallywhenitestomentalwellness.Thisapproachensuresthatindividualscanwholeheartedlyfollowtheirmissionwhilesafeguardingtheirmentalhealth.RicardhyGrandoit,anassociatedirectorandexperiencedconsultant,echoesasimilarperspective,advocatingforthedeliberatecreationofsocialimpactbyaligningpassionsandinterestswithactions.Researchunderscoresthatsuccessfulleaders,suchasNunnandGrandoit,areintentionalaboutmakingapositiveimpact,bothwithintheirprofessionaldomainsandinthebroadermunitiestheyserve.Forexample,studiesconductedwithemergingleadersworldwidesuggestthathavingaclearsenseofpurposeisoneofthemostsignificantpredictorsofwhetherleadersfeelempoweredtomakeadifferenceandeffectivelynavigatethechallengestheyencounter.3.MultiplierMindsetLeaderswiththismindsetarepropelledbyaprofounddesiretocreatealastingimpactonthelivesofthosetheylead.AnexampleofsomeonewhoholdsthemultipliermindsetisRichHollander,anexperiencedretailexpertandmanagingpartner.Richfirmlybelievesinthetransformativepowerofenablingindividualstohelpthemselves.Asheputsit,"Youcannotmotivateotherpeople...youcan,however,createsituationswherepeoplecanmotivatethemselves."Trulyeffectiveleadersprehendthattheirroleextendsfarbeyondpersonalachievements;it'saboutnurturingandguidingotherstowardtherealizationoftheirfullpotential.4.UncertaintyAcceptingMindsetThismindsetreferstoanattitudeorapproachinwhichanindividualorleaderacknowledgesandembracestheinevitabilityofchangeanduncertainty.Anillustrationofanuncertaintyacceptingmindsetcanbefo
