whichitsendssignalstothespinalcordthatresultinmuscle

movement.Whenthespinalcordreceivesthebrainsignals,

itstimulatesacollectionofnervecellsthat

canactivatedifferentmuscles.

Theresearchersreportedthatallthreepatientswhogotthe

spinalcordimplantswereabletotaketheirfirststepswithinan

hourafterreceivingthem.Overthenextsixmonths,thepatients

regainedtheabilitytotakepartinmoreadvancedwalking

activities,thestudyfound.Theywerealsoabletoridebicycles

andswimincommunitysettings.

Unlikeotherattemptstohelpparalyzedpatientswalkby

stimulatingnervesthroughthebackofthespine,Courtinesaid

thathisteamredesignedthedevicessosignalswouldenterthe

spinefromthesides.Thismethodpermitsmoredirecttargeting

andactivationofspinalcordareas,hesaid.

Theteamthendevelopedartificialintelligence(AI)systems

linkedtothedevice.TheAIcontrolselectrodesonthedeviceto

sendsignalstostimulateindividualnervesthatcontrolmuscles

neededforwalkingandotheractivities.However,becausethe

patientsmuscleswereweakfromnotbeingused,theyneeded

helpwithsupportingtheirweight,theresearcherssaid.Italso

tooksometimeforthemtolearntoworkwiththetechnology.
