theauctioneercalledoutbids,inNewYorkoneoftheoldestbanksonWaIIStreet,
LehmanBrothers,filedforbankruptcy.
TheworIdartmarkethadaIreadybeenlosingmomentumforawhileafterrising
bewiIderinglysinee2023.Atitspeakin2023itwasworthsome$65biIIion,reckons
ClareMcAndrew,founderofArtsEconomics,aresearchfirm——doublethefigurefive
yearsearIier.Sincethenitmayhavecomedownto$50billion.Butthemarket
generatesinterestfarbeyonditssizebecauseitbringstogethergreatwealth,
enormousegos,greed,passionandcontroversyinawaymatchedbyfewother
industries.
IntheweeksandmonthsthatfoIIowedMrHirst'ssale,spendingofanysort
becamedeepIyunfashionabIe,especiaIIyinNewYork,wherethebaiI-outofthebanks
