TypesofJobInterview

Ajobinterviewisaprocessinwhichapotentialemployeeisevaluatedbyan

employerforprospectiveemploymentinafirm.Aftertheinterview,theinterviewerwill

determinewhetheranapplicantissuitablefortheposition.

Theremaybedifferentinterviewsduringajobsearch.Ifsimportantthatthe

candidatesunderstandthepurposeofeach.Threeverycommontypesofinterviews

aretelephonescreeninginterview,in-personscreeninginterviewandselection

interview.

Othertypesofinterviewsarealsocoveredhere.Nomatterwhichtypeof

interview,thecandidates,goalistopresenttheirqualificationstothedecisionmakers

(thepeoplewhomakethedecisiontohireornot).Noteveryonethecandidatescome

intocontactwithwillbeadecisionmaker.However,thecandidatesshouldtreateach

personasthoughtheyhavetheauthoritytohirethem(fromtheparkingattendant,to

thesecretary,totheCEO).

1.TelephoneScreeningInterview.Thisinterviewsavestheemployertimeby

eliminatingcandidatesbasedonessentialcriteriasuchasparticularjobrequirements,

educationorrequiredskills.Sincetheseinterviewswilloftenoccurunexpectedly,it's

importantthatthecandidates,jobsearchrecordsareorganisedandkeptwherethey

canbereachedatamomentsnotice.Thereforeitisagoodideatohaveaparticular

placeinyourhomeforyourdocuments.Keepyourresumeinviewandrefertoitas

needed.

2.In-personScreeningInterview.Thisinterviewisusedtoverifythecandidate's

qualificationsforthepositionandtoestablishapreliminaryimpressionofthe

candidate'sattitude,interestandprofessionalstyle.Aprofessionalscreenerfromthe

employer'sHumanResourcesDepartmentusuallyconductstheinterview.Atthis

stage,thegoalistoselectthemostsuitablecandidateswhowillmeetthedecision

makers.

3.SelectionInterview.Conductedbythedecisionmaker,thepurposeofthis

interviewistoprobethecandidate'squalificationsandtoassessthecomfortlevelwith

whichthecandidatemightestablishworkingrelationships.Theremaybemorethan

oneinterviewatthisstage.Asthenumberofcandidatesiswhittleddown,acandidate

maybeinvitedbacktospeakwiththesamepersonand/orwithothermanagersor

membersoftheworkgroup.Thecandidate'sabilitytoestablishrapportandpresent

yourselfastherightpersonforthepositioniscritical.

Evenifthereisonlyonedecisionmaker,theopinionsoftheotherswillbesought

andwillprobablyhaveaneffectontheoutcome.Whenyou'reinvitedtointerviewwith

anumberofpeople,ifsimportantthatyoupresentyourselfeffectivelytoeachoneof

them.Remember,theywillbeevaluatingyourskillsandabilitytofitin.Asalways,be

yourself,butselltoeachperson'sindividualconcerns.

4.WorkSampleInterview.Thisinterviewisdonetoallowtheapplicantan

opportunityto“showtheirwares**.Itcouldbeatimeforagraphicartisttodisplay

his/herportfolio.Asalespersonmaybeaskedtomakeasalespresentation.Anoffice

workermaybeaskedtocompleteabusinessletterusingaspecifictypeofcomputer

softwareprogramme.

5.PeerGroupInterview.Thisinterviewisanopportunitytomeetandtalkwith

prospectivecoworkers.Justasinotherinterviews,thepeergroupwillbeevaluating

thecandidate,determininghowhewouldfitin.

6.GroupInterview.Sometimesreferredtoasapanelinterview,itusually

consistsofthreeormorepeople,allaskingquestions.Directyouranswertothe

individualaskingthequestion,buttrytomaintainsomeeyecontactwiththeother

membersofthegroup.Don'tforgettosmile.Itshowsconfidence.

7.LuncheonInterview.uTheMeal”—Thistypeofinterviewassesseshowwella

candidatecanhandlehimselfinasocialsituation.Employerrepresentativesmay

includetheRecruitmentManager,apersonfromtheHumanResourcesDepartment

andoneormorepeergroupemployees.Mealsshouldbechosencarefully.Aspillon

8.StressInterview.Astressinterviewintroducesyounottoaninterviewer,butto

an“interrogator’.Theinterviewisoneinwhichthecandidateistreatedasthoughhe

istheenemy.Theinterrogatorasksanumberofoffensivequestionsthatare

designedtodeliberatelycausediscomfort.Keepcool,taketimeinrespondingtothe

questions,andwhenifsallover,rewardyourself.Don*ttakeitpersonally.Thisis

usuallyatestofhowyouwillhandlestressonthejob.

9.VideoconferenceInterview.Someemployerstodayusevideoconferencesto

conductmeetingsorcarryoutotheraspectsoftheirbusiness.Conductingan

interviewviavideoconferenceenablesanemployertosavetravelcostsandstillhave,

ineffect,aperson-to-personinterview.Ifthethoughtoffacingacameraduringan

interviewfrightensyou,practisebeforeavideocameraoramirror.
