ThisismyfirstvisittoJapan,andthewarmthyouhaveshownus,thebeautyofyourlandscape,andthevibrancyofyourculturearetrulyincrediblegiftstoallwhocometothiscountry.Yesterdayevening,asIarrivedinTokyo,Iwasstruckbythemagnificenceoftheskyline–andthismorningIwasawedbytheancientbeautyoftheImperialPalace.ThewondersofthislandareatestamenttothecreativityandresilienceoftheJapanesepeople.

ItisanhonortojoinyoutodayattheWorldAssemblyforWomen.Iamgratefultobewiththise*ceptionalandpassionategroupofleaderstodiscusstheeconomicempowermentofwomen,tocelebratetheprogressoursocietieshavemade,andtochartaboldcourseforthefuture.

Theeconomicempowermentofwomenhasbeenafocusofmineformanyyears–ensuringthat50%ofourpopulationcanfullyparticipateintheworkforceiscriticaltostrengtheningourcommunitiesandgrowingourprosperity.

Thatiswhyaftermyfather’selection,Idecidedtoleavemybusinessesandworkingovernmenttoadvancepoliciesandinitiativesthatempowerwomentofullyparticipateintheeconomy,iftheysochoose.Policiesthatenablewomentopursuetheircareersandcarefortheirfamilies,policiesthatfocusonworkforcedevelopmentandskillstraining,andpoliciesthatfuelentrepreneurshipsothatAmericanscanturntheiraspirationsintotheirincrediblelegacy.

Itiscriticalaswelooktowardthefuture,thatwedon’tallowwomenintheUnitedStatesandaroundtheworldtobeleftbehindbythe4thIndustrialRevolution–arevolutionthat’sintegratingrobotics,computerprograming,artificialintelligence,socialmedia,andcutting-edgetechnologiesintoeveryaspectofoursociety.

Astechnologytransformseveryindustry,wemustworktoensurethatwomenhaveaccesstothesameeducationandindustryopportunitiesasmen.

FemaleandminorityparticipationinSTEMfieldsismovinginthewrongdirection.Womentodayrepresentonly13percentofengineersand24percentofComputerScienceprofessionals,downfrom35percentin1990.Wemustcreateequalparticipationinthesetraditionallymale-dominatedsectorsofoureconomy,whichareamongthefastest-growingandmostlucrativeindustriesintheworld.Overthecomingdecades,technologiessuchasautomationandroboticswilltransformthewaywework,andwewanttomakesurethatwomencanleadintheeconomyofthefuture.Otherwise,notonlywillwefailinclosingthepersistentgenderwagegap,wewillriskreversingthehard-foughtprogresswehavemadeinthisfight.
