ofthehighestintheworld,requirestheconsumptionofmanufacturedproductsin

ever-increasingamounts.Man,abouttobeburiedinhisownwaste,iscaughtina

viciouscycle.

Only100yearsagomanlivedinharmonywithnature.Thereweren'tsomany

peoplethenandtheirwantswerefewer.Whateverwasteswereproducedcouldbe

absorbedbynatureandweresooncoveredover.Todaythisharmoniousrelationship

isthreatenedbyman'slackofforesightandplanning,andbyhiscarelessnessand

greed,formanisslowlypoisoninghisenvironment.

Pollutionisa“dirty"word.Topollutemeanstocontaminate一tospoil

somethingbyintroducingimpuritieswhichmakeitunfitoruncleartouse.Pollution

comesinmanyforms.Weseeit,wesmellit,tasteit,drinkit,andstumblethroughit.

Weliterallyliveinandbreathepollution,and,notsurprisingly,itisbeginningto

threatenourhealth,ourhappiness,andourverycivilization.Oncewethoughtof

pollutionasmeaningsimplysmog——thechoking,stinging,dirtyairthathoversover

cities.Butairpollution,whileitisstillthemostdangerous,isonlyonetypeof

contaminationamongseveralwhichattackthemostbasiclifefunction.Throughthe

uncontrolleduseofinsecticides,manhaspollutedtheland,killingthewildlife.By

dumpingsewageandchemicalintoriversandlakes,wehavecontaminatedour

drinkingwater.Wearepollutingtheoceans,too,killingthefishandthereby

deprivingourselvesofaninvaluablefoodsupply.Partoftheproblemisourexploding

population.

Moreandmorepeopleproducemorewastes.Butthisproblemisintensified

byour"throw-away"technology.EachyearAmericandisposeof7millionautos,20

milliontonsofwastepaper,25millionpoundsoftoothpastetubesand48million

cans.Wethrowawaygumwrappers,newspapers,andpaperplates.Itisnolonger

fashionabletoreuseanything.Todayalmosteverythingisdisposable.Insteadof

repairingatoasteroraradio,itiseasierandcheapertobuyanewoneanddiscard

theold,eventhough95percentofitspartsmaystillbefunctioning.Babydiapers,

whichusedtobemadeofclothandnowhavedisposablesubstitutes:"Wearitonce

andthrowitaway,"willbethesloganofthefashionconscious.

Whereisthisalltoend?Areweturningtheworldintoagiganticdump,oris

therehopethatwecansolvethepollutionproblem?Fortunately,solutionsarein

sight.Afewofthemarepositivelyingenious.Taketheproblemofdiscarded

automobiles,forinstance.Eachyearover40,000ofthemareabandonedinNewYork

Cityalone.Eventuallythediscardsendupinajunkyard.Butcarsaretoobulkytoship

asscraptoasteelmill.Theymustfirstbeflattened.Thisisdoneinagiant

compressorwhichcanreduceaCadillactothesizeofatelevisionsetinamatterof

minutes.Anyleftoverscrapmetalismixedwithconcreteandmadeinto

exceptionallystrongbricksthatareusedinbuildingsandbridges.Man'singenuity

hascometohisrescue.

Whataboutwaterpollution?Moreandmorecitiesarebuilding

sewage-treatmentplants.Insteadofbeingdumpedintoanearbyriverorlake,

sewageissentthroughasystemofundergroundpipestoagianttankwherethe

waterisseparatedfromthesolidmaterialcalledsludge.Thesludgecanbeconverted

intofertilizer,andcanalsobemadeintobricks.

Controllingairpollutionisanothercrucialobjective.Withoutfood,mancan

liveaboutfiveweeks;withoutwater,aboutfivedays.Withoutair,hecanonlylive

fiveminutes,sopureairisamust.Herethewrongdoeristheautomobile.Where

thereisaconcentrationofautomobiles,asinourbigcities,airpollutionissevere.It

isimportanttoseethatourcarsareequippedwithpollution-controldevices.Such

deviceseffectivelyreducetheharmfulgasesemittedfromtheengine.Powerplants,

factories,andapartmentbuildingscanalsoavoidairpollution.Whenpossiblethey

shouldusecleanfuelslikegasandoil.Andthesmokestacksofthesebuildingsshould

beequippedwithfiltersandothersmoke-reductiondevices.

Canweeliminatepollutionaltogether?Probablynot.Modemmanpollutes

witheverythinghedoes,sototaleliminationwouldrequiredrasticmeasures.Every

powerplantwouldhavetoshutdown.Industrieswouldhavetoclose.Wewould

havetoleaveallourautomobilesinthegarage.Everybusandtruckandairplane

wouldhavetostoprunning.Therewouldbenowaytobringfoodtothecities.There

wouldbenoheatandlight.Undertheseconditions,ourpopulationwoulddieina

shorttime.Sincesuchadrasticsolutionisimpossible,wemustemploydetermined

publicaction.Wecanreducepollution,evenifwecan'teliminateitaltogether.But

everyonemustdohispart.Wecanhaveacleanworld;wecandosomething.The

choiceisuptoyou.

"WhenIdirectShakespeare,"theatricalinnovatorPeterSellarsoncesaid,"the

firstthingIdoisgotothetextforcuts.Igothroughtofindthepassagesthatarereal

heavy,thatreallyarenotneeded,placeswherethelanguagehasbecomeobscure,

placeswherethereisabizarredetour.AndthenItakethosemoments,those

elements,andImakethemthecenterpiece,thecoreoftheproduction."

InthesobermatterofstagingShakespeare,suchaudaciousnessishardto

resist——thoughalotofChicagotheatre-goershavebeenableto.Typically,athirdof

thepeoplewhohavebeenshowingupattheGoodmanTheatretoseeSellars'

ingeniousreworkingofTheMerchantofVenicehavebeenwalkingoutbeforethe

eveningisover.It'snomystery,why?Theeveningisn'toverfornearlyfourhours.

Beyondthat,theproductionprettymuchupendseverythingtheaudiencehascome

toexpectfromoneofShakespeare'smosttroublingbutreliableentertaining

comedies.

Theplayhasbeentransplantedfromtheteeming,multiculturalworldof15th

centuryVenice,Italy,totheteeming,multiculturalworldof1994VeniceBeach,

California,whereSellarsliveswhenheisn'tsettingDonGiovanniinSpanishHarlem,

puttingKingLearinaLincolnContinentalordeconstructingotherclassicplaysand

operas.Shylock,alongwiththeplay'sotherJews,isblack.Antonio,themerchantof

thetitle,andhiskinsmenareLatinos.Portia,thewealthymaidenbeingwooedby

Antonio'sfriendBassanio,isAsian.ButtheracialshufflingisjustoneofSellars'

liberties.Thestageisfurnishedwithlittlebutofficefurniture,whilevideoscreens

simulcasttheactorsinclose-upduringtheirmonologues,(and,inbetween,display

seeminglyunrelatedSouthernCaliforniascene,fromgardensandswimmingpoolsto

theL.A.riots).Criesofanguishcomefromtheclowns,andtheplayfullyromantic

finalscene,inwhichPortiateasesBassanioforgivingawayherringtothelawyershe

playedindisguise,isre-imaginedasthedarkest,mostpoisonouslyunsettlingpassage

intheplay.

Someofthisseemstobesheerperversity,buttherealshockofSellars'

productionishowwellitworksboththeatricallyandthematically.Theracialcasting,

forinstance,isabrilliantwayofdefusingtheplay'santi-Semitism一turningitintoa

metaphorforprejudiceandmaterialisminallitsforms.PaulButlerisahardhearted

ghettobusinessmanwho,evenwhenheishumiliatedattheend,neverloseshiscool

orstoopsforpity.

WrongheadedandtortuousasthisMerchantsometimesis,theupdatingis

wittyandapt.The"newsoftheRialto"becomesfodderforapairofgossipreporters

onahappy-talkTVnewscast.Shylock'strialispresidedoverbyamumbling,

superannuatedjudgewhocouldhavesteppedfightoutofCourtTV.Withafew

exceptions——ElaineTse'soverwroughtPortia,forinstance——theactorsstrikeanice

balancebetweenShakespeare'spoetryandSellars'stuntdriving.Fortherestofus,

it'sawildride.

PASSAGETHREE

Sinceancienttimesithasbeenknownthatyourwordisacausesetinmotion.

Infact,theuniverseitselfisclaimedtohaveemanatedfromasingleprimordial

sound.Inthescienceofyoga,itisbelievedthatcertainSanskritwords,knownas

mantras,canbringaboutmagicalresults,thusyoucansecureabundancewitha

certainmantra,peacewithanother,andsoon.Onamorepracticallevel,yourword

stillremainshighlypotent.

Withyourwords,youcanwoundsomeone,sendingthemintospiralsof

defeat,andwithyourwordsyoucanhealsomeone,raisingthemupfromadismal

placetosoaringhopeandmotivation.Infact,theentirefieldofself-improvementis

thetransmissionofwordsthatwillassistotherstogetafirmperspectiveandmove

forwardwiththeirlives,fulfillingtheirdreamsanddesires.

Onapersonallevel,too,yourwordsaffectyou.Whatyousaytoyourself

aboutanyoneoranythingaffectsyou,too.Ifyouspeakwellofsomeoneor

something,youbringmoreofthatharmonyintoyourlife.Andifyouspeakillof

someoneorsomething,youwillbringmoreofthatfrustrationandangerandconflict

intoyourlife.

Psychologicalliteratureoftenspeaksofnumerouscaseswhereaparent's

words,spokencasually,canaffectthedestinyofachild.Andthemostpotentwords

thataparentcanusetoaffectachildarethosespokenatthetimeofdyingsince

thesearethelastwords,andthemomentissohighly-chargedandtheawarenessso

acutethatthesewordsbecomeanimperativethatthechildnowfeelsobligatedto

neverdisown.

Wordsarefurtherchargedwiththeemotionbehindthem.Thestrongerthe

emotion,themorehighlychargedthewords.Manyaloveaffairhasfallenbythe

waysidebecauseofemotionallychargedwords,whicharelaterregretted.

Despiteallthis,peopleusewordswiththeutmostcasualness.Peoplewreck

theirownlivesandthatofothersthroughthecarelessuseofwords.Theyalsoaccept

thewordsofothersasagiventruth,when,infact,allcommentsbyothersare

merelyopinion.

Themostmarvelousaspectofwordsishowtheycanbendtime.The

brilliantlycraftedwordsofShakespeareortheeloquenceofMartinLutherKingstill

shapeourlives.Wordsaresosacredthatwholebuildingsareusedtoarchivethem

andmakethemavailableforreading.

Apersoncanrisefrompovertytowealth,fromsicknesstohealth,andfrom

lonelinesstolovingcompanionshipsimplythroughexposingthemselvestothemost

beneficialstreamofwords.

Wordsnotonlystealhearts,butshaperealityaswell.Theearthcanbea

betterplacebecauseofyourchoiceofwords.Youcanfillliveswiththemiraclesof

yourwords.Youcanbeanagentforpositivechangeandbringoutthebestin

yourselfandotherssimplybyhowyouusewords.Wordsarepsychicshape-shifters;

usethemwisely.

PASSAGEFOUR

imagineachartthatbeginswhenmanfirstappearedontheplanetandtracks

theeconomicgrowthofsocietiesfromthenforward.Itwouldbealong,flatlineuntil

thelate16thorearly17thcentury,whenitwouldstarttrendingupward.Formostof

humankindlifewasastheEnglishphilosopherThomasHobbesfamouslydescribedit

in1651一"solitary,poor,nasty,brutish,andshort."ButasHobbeswaswritingthose

words,theworldaroundhimwaschanging.Putsimply,humanbeingsweregetting

smarter.

Peoplehavealwayssoughtknowledge.Thescientificrevolution,followedby

theEnlightenment,markedafundamentalshift.Humanswerenolongersearching

forwayssimplytofitintoanaturalordivineorder;buttheywereseekingtochange

it.Oncepeoplefoundwaystoharnessenergy——usingsteamengines——theywere

abletobuildmachinesthatharnessedfarmorepowerthananyhumanorhorse

couldeverdo.Andpeoplecouldworkwithoutevergettingtired.Theriseofthese

machinesdrovetheIndustrialRevolution,andcreatedawholenewsystemoflife.

Todaythesearchforknowledgecontinuestoproduceanongoingrevolutioninthe

healthandwealthofhumankind.

Iftheriseofsciencemarksthefirstgreattrendinthisstory,thesecondisits

diffusion.WhatwashappeninginBritainduringtheIndustrialRevolutionwasnotan

isolatedphenomenon.AsuccessionofvisitorstoBritainwouldgobacktoreportto

theircountriesonthetechnologicalandcommercialinnovationstheysawthere.

Sometimessocietieswereabletolearnextremelyfast,asintheUnitedStates.

Others,likeGermany,wasbenefitedfromstartinglate,leapfroggingthe

long-drawn-outprocessthatBritainwentthrough.

Thisdiffusionofknowledgeaccelerateddramaticallyinrecentdecades.Over

thelast30yearswehavewatchedcountrieslikeJapan,Singapore,SouthKoreaand

nowChinagrowatapacethatisthreetimesthatofBritainortheUnitedStatesat

thepeakoftheIndustrialRevolution.Theyhavebeenabletodothisbecauseoftheir

energiesandexertions,ofcourse,butalsobecausetheycleverlyandperhapsluckily

adoptedcertainideasaboutdevelopmentthathadworkedintheWest一reasonably

freemarkets,opentrade,afocusonscienceandtechnology,amongthem.

Thediffusionofknowledgeisthedominanttrendofourtimeandgoeswell

beyondthepurelyscientific.ConsiderthecasesofTurkeyandBrazil.Ifyouhadasked

aneconomist20yearsagohowtothinkaboutthesetwocountries,hewouldhave

explainedthattheywereclassicbasket-case,ThirdWorldeconomies,withtriple-digit

inflation,soaringdebtburdens,aweakprivatesectorandsnail's-pacegrowth.Today

theyarebothremarkablywellmanaged,withinflationinsingledigitsandgrowth

above5percent.Andthisshiftishappeningaroundtheworld.FromThailandto

SouthAfricatoSlovakiatoMexico,countriesarefarbettermanagedeconomically

thantheyhaveeverbeen.Evenincaseswherepoliticalconstraintsmakeitdifficult

topushfar-reachingreforms,asinBrazil,MexicoorIndia,governmentsstillmanage

theiraffairssensibly,observingtheHippocraticoathnottodoanyharm.

Wearesometimesreluctanttobelieveinprogress.Buttheevidenceis

unmistakable.Themanagementofmajoreconomieshasgottenmarkedlybetterin

thelastfewyears.Carefulmonetarypolicyhastemperedtheboom-and-bust

economiccyclesoftheindustrialworld,producingmilderrecessionsandfewer

shocks.Everydayonereadsofanewstudycomparingnationsineverythingfrom

Internetpenetrationtoinflation.Allthesestudiesandlistsaresymbolsofalearning

processthatisaccelerating,reinforcingthelessonsofsuccessandfailure.Callita

best-practiceworld.

IrealizethattheworldIamdescribingistheworldofthewinners.Thereare

billionsofpeople,lockedoutsideglobalmarkets,whoselivesarestillaccurately

describedbyHobbes'scruelphrase.Butevenhere,thereischange.Therecognition

ofglobalinequalitiesismoremarkedtodaythaneverbefore,andthislearningis

forcingaction.Thereismoremoneybeingspentonvaccinesandcuresfordiseases

inAfricaandAsiatodaythaneverbeforeinhistory.Foreign-aidprogramsface

constantscrutinyandanalysis.Whenthingsdon'twork,welearnthat,too,andit

putsafocuseitherontheaidprogramoronlocalgovernmentstoimprove.

Thismaysoundoverlyoptimistic.Therearelosersineveryrace,butletnot

theworriesoverwhoiswinningandlosingtheknowledgeraceobscurethemore

powerfulunderlyingdynamic:knowledgeisliberating.Itcreatesthepossibilityfor

changeandimprovementeverywhere.Itcancreateamazingdevicesandtechniques,

savelives,improvelivingstandardsandspreadinformation.Somewilldowellonone

measure,othersonanother.Butonthewhole,aknowledge-basedworldwillbea

healthierandricherworld.

ThecaveatIwouldmakeisnotaboutoneoranothercountry'spaucityof

engineersorcomputers.Theseproblemscanbesolved.Butknowledgeisnotthe

samethingaswisdom.Knowledgecanproduceequallypowerfulwaystodestroylife,

intentionallyandunintentionally.Itcanproducehateandseekdestruction.

KnowledgedoesnotbyitselfbringanyanswertotheancientGreekquestion"What

isaGoodLife?"Itdoesnotproducegoodsense,courage,generosityandtolerance.

Andmostcrucially,itdoesnotproducethefarsightednessthatwillallowusalltolive

together——andgrowtogether—onthisworldwithoutcausingwar,chaosand
