GoalsandObjectives

Theoverarchinggoalofthe3rdgradeEnglishcurriculumistodevelopstudents'Englishproficiencyinlistening,speaking,reading,andwriting,aswellastheirinterculturalcompetence.Thespecificobjectivesare:

Toimprovestudents'pronunciation,vocabulary,andgrammarthroughoraldrills,dictations,games,andsongs.

Toenhancestudents'listeningcomprehensionanddiscriminationthroughvariousaudiomaterials,suchasstories,dialogues,interviews,andpodcasts.

ToenablestudentstoreadEnglishtextswithcomprehension,speed,andsensitivity,andtorecognizeandusevariousreadingstrategies,suchasskimming,scanning,predicting,andinferring.

Toengagestudentsinwritingdifferenttypesoftexts,suchasletters,journals,reports,stories,andpoems,andtoreviseandedittheirownandothers'writingbasedonfeedbackandcriteria.

Toexposestudentstodiversecultures,customs,values,andperspectives,andtoencouragethemtorespect,appreciate,andlearnfromthem.

Thecurriculumisdividedintosixunits,eachofwhichfocusesonatheme,agrammarstructure,asetofvocabularywords,andaculturaltopic.Thefollowingtablesummarizestheunitsandtheircontents:

Eachunitcontainsseverallessonsthatfollowasimilarformat:warm-up,presentation,practice,production,andassessment.Thewarm-upmaybeareviewofthepreviouslesson,apreviewofthecurrentlesson,oragameorsongrelatedtothetheme.Thepresentationmayusepictures,videos,diagrams,orrealiatointroducethegrammarstructure,thevocabularyitems,ortheculturaltopic.Thepracticemayinvolvedrills,exercises,games,orgroupworkthatreinforcethetargetlanguageandenhancestudents'interactionandconfidence.Theproductionmaybeaperformancetask,aproject,oranopen-endedtaskthatallowsstudentstoapplyandpersonalizewhattheyhavelearned.Theassessmentmaybeaquiz,atest,orarubric-basedevaluationthatmeasuresstudents'achievementandprogress.

ExampleLesson:Unit2,Lesson3(Home)

Warm-up:Reviewthevocabularyofrooms,prepositions,andadverbsoffrequencybyplayingaguessinggame.Onestudentdescribesaroominhis/herhomeusingthetargetlanguage,andtheotherstudentstrytoguesswhichroomitis.

Presentation:Showapictureofamessyroomandaskstudentstoidentifytheobjectsandtheirlocations.Then,introducethepresentcontinuoustensebyshowingasentencelike"Iamcleaningtheroom"andelicitingthemeaning,form,andpronunciation.Usegesturesandexamplestoclarifythe-ingendingandtheauxiliaryverb"tobe".

Practice:Havestudentsdoafill-in-the-blankexercisewiththepresentcontinuousbasedonadialogbetweenamotherandachildwhoarecleaningtheirrooms.Then,havethemdoapairworkactivitywheretheyaskandanswerquestionsabouttheircurrentactionsusingthepresentcontinuous.Providefeedbackandcorrection.

Production:Askstudentstoplananddrawaposterofacleanandorganizedroom,usingadjectivesandadverbstodescribeit.Theycanthenpresentandexplaintheirposterstotheclassandanswerquestions.

Assessment:Givestudentsaworksheetwithsentencesthatrequirethemtochoosethecorrectformofthepresentcontinuousortocompletethemwiththecorrectform.Gradetheworksheetbasedonaccuracy,completeness,andlegibility.
