IntheUnitedStates,theholidayiscelebratedonthefourthThursdayinNovemberwhileinCanada(whichhasanearlyharvestcycleandseason),theholidayisobservedonthesecondMondayinOctober,knownastheColumbusDay.MuchliketheChristianThanksgivingday,itiscelebratedwithpompandshow.

Since1930,theendofThanksgivingseasonmarksthebeginningofChristmasshoppingseason.

InCanada,ThanksgivingholidaylastsforonlythreedaysbutthetimeperiodmayvaryintheUS.LetshavealookatthebriefhistoryofThanksgivinginNorthAmerica,U.S.andCanada:

InNorthAmerica:ThanksgivingDaywasfirstcelebratedonSeptember8,1565inSt.AugustinewhenPedroMenendezdeAvilesandhismensharedafeastwiththenatives.AfterthatPilgrimsheldathreedaysfeasttomakemerrimentontheirenormousharvest.

InUnitedStates:TheimmigrantswhosailedtothiscountryaboardtheMayflowerwerebasicallymembersoftheEnglishSeparatistChurch(aPuritansect).

TheytookshelterinNetherlandsbutsoonweredisgustedbytheirlifestyle.TheysettledinUnitedStateswithadesireforabetterlifestyle.

Buttheirbeginningwashorrendous.Theclimatewasunfavorableandmanyofthemdied.Butin1621theyhardturmoilborefruitsforthemastherewasahugeharvest.Theycelebrateditwithafeastwith91Indianswhohadhelpedthemduringtheirharshtimes.

ThanksgivingwascelebratedafterthatatirregularintervalsuntilFranklinRoosevelt,hadsetitoneweektothene*t-to-lastThursdayofNovemberinorderkeepinganeyeoncommercialbenefitsasChristmaswasnearby.

Allegationswerebroughtagainstthisdecision,whichmadethePresidenttomoveThanksgivingbacktoitsoriginaldatetwoyearslater.Andin1941,ThanksgivingwasfinallysanctionedbyCongressasalegalholiday,asthefourthThursdayinNovember.

InCanada:ProbablytheAmericanswhomigratedtoCanadaafterAmericanIndependencebroughtwiththemthepracticesofThanksgiving.InitiallyitwascelebratedinEnglishCanadianSocietybutlateritbecameacountrywidepractice.

Formally,CanadianThanksgivingDaywascelebratedonApril5,1872onbehalfofthePrinceofWalesrecoveryfromillness.InnumerabletransformationstookplacebeforethedateofcelebrationfinallysettledonthesecondMondayinOctoberin1957.
