IntheU.S.MothersDayisaholidaycelebratedonsecondSundayinMay.Itisadaywhenchildrenhonortheirmotherswithcards，gifts，andflowers.FirstobservanceinPhiladelphia，Pa.in1907，itisbasedonsuggestionsbyJuliaWardHowein1872andbyAnnaJarvisin1907.

AlthoughitwasntcelebratedintheU.S.until1907，thereweredayshonoringmotherseveninthedaysofancientGreece.Inthosedays，however，itwasRhea，theMotherofthegodsthatwasgivenhonor.

Later，inthe1600s，inEnglandtherewasanannualobservancecalledMotheringSunday.ItwascelebratedduringJune，onthefourthSunday.OnMotheringSunday，theservants，whogenerallylivedwiththeiremployers，wereencouragedtoreturnhomeandhonortheirmothers.Itwastraditionalforthemtobringaspecialcakealongtocelebratetheoccasion.

IntheU.S.，in1907AnaJarvis，fromPhiladelphia，beganacampaigntoestablishanationalMothersDay.JarvispersuadedhermotherschurchinGrafton，WestVirginiatocelebrateMothersDayonthesecondanniversaryofhermothersdeath，the2ndSundayofMay.Thene*tyearMothersDaywasalsocelebratedinPhiladelphia.

Jarvisandothersbeganaletter-writingcampaigntoministers，businessmen，andpoliticiansintheirquesttoestablishanationalMothersDay.Theyweresuccessful.PresidentWoodrowWilson，in1914，madetheofficialannouncementproclaimingMothersDayanationalobservancethatwastobeheldeachyearonthe2ndSundayofMay.
