carsfigureoutwheretheywereandwhatwasgoingon.Thesetoolsincludedcameras,GPSdevices,and

othersensors.

Insteadofadriver,thecarshadacomputer.Thechallengewasforeachteamtocreateasoftware

programthatwouldallowtheircartosafelyracearoundthetrackinrecordtime.

Originally,thecarsweremeanttoracetogether.Thatturnedouttobetoodifficult.Instead,eachcar

racedbyitself,doingseverallaps.Afterafewwarm-uplaps,thecarsdidtwospeedlapsasfastasthey

couldgo.Theteamswerejudgedontheaveragespeedofthosespeedlaps.

Onlyfourteamsmadeitpastthefirstround.Inthefinalround,thecarofoneteam,PoliMOVE,reached

157mph,butlaterwounduphittingawall.Anotherteam,MIT-PITF-RW,alsohitawall.TheEuroRacing

teamhadagreatfirstlapspeedof139mph.Butbecauseofanerrorintheirprogram,thecarstoppedearly

anddidn'tdriveitssecondspeedlap.TUMAutonomousMotorsport,ateamfromtheTechnicalUniversity

ofMunich,wonthe$1milliongrandprizewithitstwo-lapaveragespeedof135.944mph.
