fordiscussion.Socrates,whoprobablyconcentratesthespiritofthehumanitiesbetterthananyone,
spenthistimeramblingaroundAthensaskingpeopleiftheythoughttheywerelivingvirtuouslives.
Hebelievedthathiscitywasgettingproudandlazy,likeanoverfedthoroughbredhorse,andthatit
neededhim,thestinginggadfly,towakeitup.TheAthenianshadtoaskthemselvesifthelivesthey
wereleadingreallyweregood.Socratesdidn'thelpthemworktheirwaytosuccess;hehelpedthem
worktheirwaytoinsightandvirtue.
Now,peopleareinlovewithsuccess——successfbrtheirchildreninparticular.Asaparentof
sonsintheir20s,Iunderstandthisandsympathizewithit.Butourjobashumanistsisn'ttosecond
whatevervalueshappentobeinplaceinsociety.We'reheretoquestionthosevaluesandmaybe-
usingthebestthathasbeenthoughtandsaid-offeralternatives.
Wecommonlythinkinbinaries.Vanillaistheoppositeofchocolate.Theoppositeofsuccess-
oftendefinedtodayashigh-statusworkandabigpaycheck-isfailure.Butthegreatbookstellus
thatthisisnotnecessarilytrue.
Thehumanitiesarenotagainstconventionalsuccess;farfromit.Manyofourstudentsgoonto
distinguishedcareersinlawandbusiness.ButIliketothinktheydosowithafullersocialandself-
awarenessthanmostpeople.Fortheyhaveapproachedsuccessasamatterofdebate,notasanidol

employeesthanthosewhohavemovedlockstepintotheiroccupations.Ialsobelievethatself-
aware,questioningpeopletendtobefarmoresuccessfulinthelongrun.
Whatmakeshumanitiesstudentsdifferentisn'ttheirpowerofexpression,theircapacityto
frameanargumentortheirabilitytodoindependentwork.Yes,thesearevaluablequalities,andwe
humanitiesteacherstrytocultivatethem.Buttruehumanitiesstudentsareexceptionalbecausethey
