Collectively,theyhaveamaintenancebacklogofmorethan$12billion.Roads,trails,
restrooms,visitorcentersandotherinfrastructurearecrumbling.
Butprivatizingandcommercializingthecampgroundswouldnotbethepanaceathatthe
InteriorDepartment'sOutdoorAdvisoryCommitteewouldhaveusbelieve.Campgroundsare
atinyportionoftheoverallinfrastructurebacklog,andconcessionairesintheparkshandover,

visitthem.Thepeer-reviewedeconomicsurveyof700U.S.taxpayers,conductedbymailand
internet,alsofoundthatpeoplewouldbewillingtopayasignificantamountofmoneyto
makesuretheparksandtheirprogramsarekeptintact.Some81%ofrespondentssaidthey
wouldbewillingtopayadditionaltaxesforthenext10yearstoavoidanycutstothenational
parks.
ThenationalparksprovidegreatvaluetoU.S.residentsbothasplacestoescapeandas
symbolsofnature.Ontopofthis,theyproducevaluefromtheirextensiveeducational
programs,theirpositiveimpactontheclimatethroughcarbonsequestration,theircontribution
