Aselectionprocedureisinvariablyobtainedbyassigningvalues22parametersingeneral"form". Moreprecisely,theselectionprocedure isanalgorithmandaspecificclassischosenwithfreeparametersandtheseparametersarethenchosensoastosatisfy(aswellastheycan)theobjectivesoftheselectionproblem. Classicalformsincludethingslikepolynomials(withcoefficientsasparameters)andlinearmappings(withmatrixcoefficientsorweightsasparameters). Otherrelevantformsaredecisiontrees(withsize,shapeandindividualdecisionelementsaaparameters)andprogram?(withvariousprogramelementsasparameters).ThemodelspresentedhereareprimarilyaimedatalgorithmproblemswiththefollowingthreeProblemS巴竺.:Thesetofproble畫involvedisverylargeandquite Thissetisofhighdimensioninthesenaethatthereareanumberofindependentcharacteristicsoftheproblemswhichareimportan七forthealgor扛血selectionandperformance. Ideallytheremaybemillionsofalgorithmsandprac-ticallytheremaybedozensofthem. Incountingalgorithmswedonotdistinguishbetweentwowhichareidenticalexceptforthevalueofsomenumericparameter.
