MorethanhalfofUSadultsusedtheWebtoengageintheUSpresidentialelectionandsupportersofBarackObamawereconsiderablymoreactiveonlinethanthoseofJohnMcCain,accordingtoastudyreleasedonWednesday.

"The2008electionwasthefirstinwhichmorethanhalfthevoting-agepopulationusedtheInternetforpoliticalpurposes,"saidthePewResearchCenter'sInternetandAmericanLifeProject,whichconductedthestudy.

Fifty-fivepercentofallvoting-ageUSadults--and74percentofallInternetusers--saidtheywentonlinefornewsandinformationabouttheelectionortocommunicatewithothersabouttherace,thestudyfound.

ThepercentageofAmericansrelyingontheWebasamajorsourceofcampaignnewsmorethandoubledoverthe2000election--from11percentto26percent,Pewsaid.

SocialnetworkingsiteslikeFacebookandMySpaceandvideo-sharingsiteslikeYouTubeplayedakeyrole,itsaid,asvoterswentonlinetosharetheirviewsandtrytomobilizeotherstotheircause.

"Votersin2008werenotjustpassivefollowersofthepoliticalprocess,"saidAaronSmith,aresearchspecialistatPewandauthorofthereport.

"Theyusedawiderangeofdigitaltoolsandtechnologiestogetinvolvedintherace,toharnesstheircreativityinsupportoftheirchosencandidate,andtojoinforceswithotherswhosharedtheirsamepoliticalgoals."

WhilemoreAmericanswentonlineforpoliticalpurposesthaneverbefore,supportersofDemocraticcandidateObamaweremoreactiveontheInternetthanthoseofhisRepublicanrivalMcCain,thestudyfound.
