ButincomparingastudyofCaliforniaforestsdoneinthe1920sand1930swith
anotheronebetween2001and2010,McIntyreandhiscolleaguesdocumenteda
widespreaddeathofbigtreesthatwasevidenteveninwildlandsprotectedfrom
woodcuttingordevelopment.
Thelossofbigtreeswasgreatestinareaswheretreeshadsufferedthegreatest
watershortage.Theresearchersfiguredoutwaterstresswithacomputermodelthat
calculatedhowmuchwatertreesweregettingincomparisonwithhowmuchtheyneeded,
