plantandatomatoplant.Doddersusearoot-likeparttoentertheirhostplantsandfeedontheir
nutrients.
Inpreviousstudies,Westwoodhaddiscoveredthatduringthisinteraction,RNAmolecules(分
子),whichplayacrucialroleintranslatinginformationpasseddownfromDNA,werebeingpassed
betweenthetwospecies.
Andrecently,WestwoodlookedintothepossibilitythataspecialtypeofRNAmolecules,
mRNAorMessengerRNA,werealsobeingexchangedbetweentheparasiticandhostplants,
mRNAmoleculessendmessageswithincells,instructingthemonwhichactionstotakeandwhen.
Throughthisexchange,theparasiticplantmaybeinstructingitshosttoloweritsdefensessothatthe
parasiticplantcanmoreeasilyattackit.
Besidesgivingusamuchdeeperinsightintothebehaviourofplants,thisinformationcould
helpscientistscomeupwithbettersolutionstofighttheparasiticweedsthatthreatenfoodcrops.
ParasiticplantsareseriousproblemsfbrcropsthathelpfeedsomeofthepoorestregionsinAfrica
andelsewhere.Inaddition,ithasexcitingimplicationsforthedesignofnovelcontrolstrategies
basedoninterruptingthemRNAinformationthattheparasite(寄生蟲(chóng))usestoreprogramthehost.

Onerecommendationisthatallsatellitesoperatingabove250milesbeequippedwith
