Passengerpigeons(旅鴿)onceflewovermuchoftheUnitedStatesin

Sadly,theabundanceofpassengerpigeonsmayhavebeentheirundoing.Where

thebirdswereabundant,peoplebelievedtherewasanever-lastingsupplyandkilled

thembythethousands.Commercialhuntersattractedthemtosmallclearingswith

grain,waiteduntilpigeonshadsettledtofeed,thenthrewlargenetsoverthem,taking

hundredsatatime.Thebirdswereshippedtolargecitiesandsoldinrestaurants.

Bytheclosingdecadesofthe19thcentury,thehardwoodforestswhere

passengerpigeonsnestedhadbeendamagedbyAmericans9needforwood,which

scattered(驅(qū)散)theflocksandforcedthebirdstogofarthernorth,wherecold

temperaturesandspringstormscontributedtotheirdecline.Soonthegreatflocks

weregone,nevertobeseenagain.

In1897,thestateofMichiganpassedalawprohibitingthekillingofpassenger

pigeons,butbythen,nosizableflockshadbeenseeninthestatefor10years.Thelast

confirmedwildpigeonintheUnitedStateswasshotbyaboyinPikeCounty,Ohio,in

1900.Foratime,afewbirdssurvivedunderhumancare.Thelastofthem,known

affectionatelyasMartha,diedattheCincinnatiZoologicalGardeninSeptember1,

1914.
