OnedayUglysharedhislovewiththeneighborshuskies.Theydid

notrespondkindly,andUglywasbadlymauled.Frommyapartment

IcouldhearhisscreamandItriedtorushtohisaid.Bythetime

Igottowherehewaslaying,itwasapparentUglyssadlifewas

almostatanend.

Uglylayinawetcircle,hisbacklegsandlowerbacktwisted

grosslyoutofshape,agapingtearinthewhitestripoffurthat

randownhisfront.AsIpickedhimupandtriedtocarryhimhome,

Icouldhearhimwheezingandgasping,andcouldfeelhimstruggling.

Itmustbehurtinghimterribly,Ithought.

ThenIfeltafamiliartugging,suckingsensationonmyear.Ugly,

insomuchpain,sufferingandobviouslydying,wastryingtosuckle

myear.Ipulledhimclosertome,andhebumpedthepalmofmyhand

withhishead,thenheturnedhisonegoldeneyetowardsme,and
