2001showedStephenflyingoverLondoninahelicopterandlatercompletinga

detaileddrawingofLondonwithinthreehours,whichincluded12historiclandmarks

Everyyear,thousandsofteenagersparticipateinprograrrsattheirlocalart

museums.Butdoanyofthemremembertheirtimeatmuseumeventslaterinlife?A

newreportsuggeststhattheanswerisyes一andfindsthatalumni(畢業(yè)生)of

arts-basedmuseumprogramscreditthemwithchangingthecourseoftheirlives,even

TheWhitneyMuseumofAmericanArt,theWalkerArtCenterandtheMuseumof

ContemporaryArt,LosAngelesrecentlyaskedresearcherstoconductastudytofind

outhoweffectivetheirlong-standingteenartprogramsreallywere.Theyinvolved

over300formerparticipantsoffourprogramsforteensthathavebeeninexistence

sincethe1990s.Alumni,whosecurrentagesrangefrom18to36,wereinvitedto

findouthowtheyviewedtheirparticipationyearsafterthefact.

Amongthealumni(surveyed),75percentofthemratedtheteenprogram

experienceasthemostfavorableimpactontheirownlives,beatingfamily,school

andtheirneighborhoods.Nearly55percentthoughtthatitwasoneofthemost

importantexperiencesthey*deverhad,regardlessofage.Andtwo-thirdssaidthat

theywereofteninsituationswheretheirexperienceinmuseumsaffectedtheir

actionsorthoughts.

Itturnsoutthatparticipatinginartprogramsalsohelpskeepteens

enthusiasticabouttheartsevenaftertheyreachadulthood:96percentof

participantshadvisitedanartmuseumwithinthelasttwoyears,and68percent

hadvisitedanartmuseumfiveormoretimeswithinthelasttwoyears.Thirty-two

percentofparticipantsworkinthearts.

Thoughthestudyisthefirstofitskindtoexploretheimpactofteen-specific

artprogramsinmuseums,itreflectsotherresearchontheimportantbenefitsof

engagingwiththearts.AdecadeofsurveysbytheNationalEndowmentfortheArts

havefoundthatteenagers'experienceswiththeartsaresignificantlyassociated

withtheirincomeandeducationalattainmentasadults.Otherstudieshavelinked
