bringsawealthofexperiencethatenrichesfriendships.Olderadultsknowwhatmattersandwhatdoesn't,making

theminvaluablecompanionswhoofferwisdomwithoutthesmallquarrelsthatoftendestroyyoungerrelationships.

TheNBERanalysisusedasuiteofdifferentcomputermodelstofigureouttherelationshipbetweenfireactivity

andhowmuchsmokewasproduced.Inyearslike2020,somenorthernCaliforniacountieswereexposedtodouble

theirnormalpollutionloadfortheyear.Inconditionslikethose,thetotalnumberofdeathsincreasedbyalmost6%.

Evenwithaggressiveclimateactionincomingdecades,wildfireactivityisforecasttogrow-andwithit,smoke

exposure.Bythemiddleofthecentury,modelssuggestpeopleacrosstheU.S.willlikelyexperiencetwotothree

timesasmuchsmokeastheydidbefore2020.Smoke-relateddeathscouldrisebyatleast8,000peopleeveryyear.
