notinreallife.Eventoday,lessthanfivepercentoffirefightersinCanadaarewomen.Speranza
decidedthatshewantedtohelpyoungwomenseethatthey,too,couldhaveacareerlikehers.
TheresultisCampCourage,aprogramforgirlsaged15to19whowanttolearnmoreabout
firefighting.In2006,Speranzaandabout20volunteerswelcomedtheirfirst17participants,
recruiting(招募)attendeesthroughadvertisinginschoolsandrecreationcenters.Overthecourse
ofeightdays,thegirlsdiscoveredtheinsandoutsofbeingfirstresponders:learninghowtoput
outfires,deliverfirstaidandevenusethejawsoflife(救生鉗)onacar.
CampCouragenowrunsonesessioneveryyearinHalifaxandisfreetoattend.Tooffset
