In2000,AndreaSperanzaachievedherdreamofbecomingafirefighterjoiningtheHalifax

RegionalFireService.Herjobwasexactlyassatisfyingassheimagineditwouldbe,exceptfor

onething:shestillhadn'tseenanotherwomaninherrole——notinamagazine,notontelevision,

notinreallife.Eventoday,lessthanfivepercentoffirefightersinCanadaarewomen.Speranza

decidedthatshewantedtohelpyoungwomenseethatthey,too,couldhaveacareerlikehers.

TheresultisCampCourage,aprogramforgirlsaged15to19whowanttolearnmoreabout

firefighting.In2006,Speranzaandabout20volunteerswelcomedtheirfirst17participants,

recruiting(招募)attendeesthroughadvertisinginschoolsandrecreationcenters.Overthecourse

ofeightdays,thegirlsdiscoveredtheinsandoutsofbeingfirstresponders:learninghowtoput
