Accentureresearchshowsthatonly36%of

executivessaytheirorganizationshavescaled

genAIsolutions,andjust13%reportachievingsignificantenterprise-levelimpact.Weare

activelyequippingthemtodoitfasterandmoresafelyaswesee2025astheyearofscaledAI.

Weareenteringanewchapter

intechnology—oneshapedby

ageneralizationofAI.Today’s

proliferationofaccessibleand

ever-presentAIwilldrivenew

levelsofautonomyallthroughoutthebusiness,evolvingtheabilitytoreinventwithtech,dataand

AI.Itwillbringnearlylimitlesspossibilitiesforinnovation

andgrowth,butalsochallenge

TherushofanAIraceisundeniable.

We’veseenitbefore.In1997,GarryKasparov

lostasix-gamechessmatchagainstIBM’sDeepBlue.1Itwasthefirsttimeacomputereverbeatachessgrandmaster,afterdecadesoftesting

machinecapabilityagainsthumansusingthis

game.ThevictorysetoffastormofexcitementandquestionsaboutAIandthefuture.Now,a

newraceisunderway.Manycompaniesbuilding

today’scutting-edgeAImodelshavetheirsightsset

onArtificialGeneralIntelligence(AGI).2,3Andlikebefore,theracehascaptivatedbusinessleaders,governments,andtheworldatlarge.

Butit’saredherring—adistractionmostbusiness

leaderscan’tafford.Someday,AGIwillbehugely

consequential,buttodayit’sstillfarawaywithdeeptechnicalandethicalchallengestoaddress.Instead,it’svitallyimportantthatleadersseethefarmore

pressingmatteralreadyhere:thegeneralizationofartificialintelligence,whichwillbringanewlevelofautonomyandcapabilitytoenterprises’systems,

workforces,andoperationslongbeforeAGIcomesintoplay.

TheGeneralizationofAI

TounderstandthisgeneralizationofAI,onesimplyneedstolookaroundandseehowrootedAIis

becominginourlives.It’sbeennearly30years

sinceKasparov’sgame,andnowmodelsthatcouldmakeDeepBluelooklikeanaverageplayerare

sittingineveryone’spockets.TheTuringTest,onceconsideredtheloftiestbenchmarkformachine

intelligence,iseffectivelybrokeneverydayby

conversationspeoplehavewithLargeLanguage

Model(LLM)-backedcustomerservicebotsand

salesagents.Today’sAImodelshaveshruggedoffthedeepbutspecificandlinearapproachesofthepastandaredemonstratingmoreautonomythanever—inhowtheylearn,approachtasks,andin

whattheyultimatelycando.Andthey’rebringingthisautonomytowork,where75%ofknowledgeworkersreportusinggenerativeAI;tohowwe

interactwithtechnology,asacodingcopilotandbyexpandingvoiceassistantcapabilities;andtonearlyeverythingelse,fromrobotics,tocars,tohealthcare.4,5,6,7,8,9,10HighlycapableadvancedAI

isdiffusingacrosseverydimensionofourlives,

instantlyaccessible,and—effectively—alwaysthere.

Thisistherealdisruptiontofocuson.Becauserightnow,evenasexecutivesracetoimplementthisnewgenerationofAI,fewarelookingpasttheseparatepiecestotrulyunderstandthescopeofwhatthey

areactuallybuilding:AI“cognitivedigitalbrains”thatwillcompletelyreshapetheroletechnologyplaysacrosstheenterpriseandpeople’slives.

WhatleadershavetofullygraspisthatthesingularlymostimportantfeatureofAIisitsabilitytolearn.

WhenAIbecomesgeneralized,andasenterprises

diffuseitacrossthebusinessandpeopleadoptit

intotheirlives,ithasthepotentialtobecomemuchmorethanjustthenewfeaturesandcapabilitiesit

provides.Enterprisesaren’tmerelyempoweringtheworkforce,creatinganewchannelforcustomer

partsofthebusiness.Andwhenpeopleuseit,they’refurtherteachingitabouttheirlikes,preferences,andneeds.

Ifbuiltintentionally,enterprisescantakeallthe

distributedAIeffortstheyarepursuingandbuildacognitivedigitalbrain.Theycanhard-code

workflows,institutionalknowledge,valuechains,socialinteractions,andsomuchothercrucialdataaboutbusinessesandtheworldintoasystemthatcanunderstand—andincreasinglyact—atahigherlevelthaneverbefore.

Whatcanapersondowiththispower?Whatcanabusinessdodeployingitacrosstheworkforce?

Whatwilltheworldlooklikeaswideproliferationbringsittoeverydimensionofourlives?Itseemsinevitablethatasleadersstarttocombinetheir

AIgeneralizationefforts,theywillsoonenhanceandempowerindividuals,driveandhelpoperateenterprises,radicallyreshapeindustriesandevenupliftnationstates.

TakeInsilicoMedicine,apharmaceuticalcompany,whichusedgenerativeAItogofromdiscovery

tophaseonetrialsofadruginunder30months,

aroundhalfthetimeitusuallytakes.11Theyused

onemodelfinetunedonomicsandclinicaldata

toidentifypotentialtargetsfordrugtherapy.To

developpossibledrugcompositions,theyuseda

generativechemistryenginethatconsistedof500predictiveandpre-trainedmodels.ForInsilico,AIisattheveryheartofwhattheydo—shapingtheverybusinessandindustryaroundit.

ACognitiveDigitalBrainatEveryLevel

Itcanbedifficulttoseethistrend;ateverylayerofscaleitmanifestsslightlydifferently.Butacrosstheboard,thisnextstageforAIwillinfuseenhanced

capabilityandincreasedautonomyintoeverythingittouches.Forindividuals,thecognitivedigitalbrainwilloperateasaco-pilotorsidekick,somethingthatwillunderstandtheirjob,learntheirpreferences,

andgettoknowthemthroughitsinteractions,inserviceofhelpingthembeanenhancedversionofthemselves.Forbusinesses,itmightseem

morelikeacentralnervoussystem—anevolutionoftheenterprisearchitectureintosomething

thatcancapturethecollectiveknowledgeofthebusiness,itsuniquedifferentiators,anditscultureandpersona,andbecomeakeyorchestrator(andevenautonomousoperator)forpartsofit.For

industries,itmaylooklikethecommonframeworkandcommunicationsprotocolbetweencompaniesinanindustry,orenginescodifyingthegrand

challengesthatshapeanindustry—modelsthat

willhelpgrowourunderstandingofthingslike

physics,genetics,movement,andmore.Andforcountriesandgovernments,itbringstogether

theuniqueknowledge,language,culture,laws,

andsecuritytohelpindustries,companies,and

citizensengage.Critically,thesecognitivedigitalbrainswon’toperateinsilos.Whentheybegintointeractatalllevels,theywillcreatearisingtideofintelligencethatelevatesthecapabilitiesofeverypartyinvolved.

Thisiswhyitisa“declarationofautonomy.”

Wemaycallthemdifferentthings,butacrosstherangetheevolutionisthesame:theprolifierationofautonomousAIsystemshappeningacross

societywilluplifttheworldtothenextlevelof

capability,performance,andprogress.Itwillspur

anevolutiontowardsaworldenhancedatalllevelsbyAIcognition,andgenerateanunprecedented

waveofautonomythatwillreshapetechnologyandbusinessesasweknowthem.

Afirstthoughtmaybethatthisisexclusivelya

transitionfromautomationusingAItoautonomyindigitalsystems.It’snotwrong,butit’sonlypartofthestory—AIispoweringautonomyindozensofways.It’sgivingpeopleaccesstoskillsthey

wouldn’totherwisepossess,lettingthemact

withmoreinitiativeandlessfrictionthanbefore.

It’sgivingrobotsanewdegreeofcontextand

reasoningabouttheworld,allowingthemtotake

onawiderandmorecomplexrangeoftasksand,

mostimportantly,co-minglewithhumanslikeneverbefore.Andofcourse,agenticandmulti-agentAI

WhatmakesaCognitiveDigitalBrain?

Thecognitivedigitalbrainwillbecomethecentralnervoussystemforenterprisedecision-making

andcontinuouslearning.Usedtopowerenterprises'futureambitions,likeintention-basedarchitectures,itiscomprisedoffourinterconnectedlayersthattogetherorganize,process,andactoninformation.

Knowledge:Technologieslikeknowledgegraphsandvectordatabasesgather,organize,andstructuredatafromacrosstheenterpriseandbeyond.

Models:Large-scalegenerativeAImodelsaswellasclassicalMLanddeeplearningmodelsperformcriticalthinkingandreasoningfunctionstoturndataintoactionableoutcomes.

Agents:Designedtobeproblem-solvers,tackletaskswithminimalhumaninput,andlearnandgrowovertime,AIagentsbringplanning,reflection,andadaptabilitytothemix.

Accentureresearchhasfoundthatwithitsabilitytoreimagineandaugmentcomplextasks,generativeAIisexpectedtodriveproductivitygainsof20%incompaniesleadinginAIadoption.12

Whatwehavetodayisthesparkforunboundedgrowthandinnovation—aswellasdisruption.Asever-greaterautonomyreducesfrictionwithin

andbetweenorganizations,lettingusgetmore

donefaster,earlymoverswillbeabletosecure

advantagesthatlastdecades.Failingtoactor

waitingtoolongwillgivegroundforcompetitors,newandold,todisruptindustrynormsjustas

wesawinthedigitalera.Andconsiderthis:Lessthan1%oftoday’sglobalinternetmarketcap

wasfoundedinthefirsttwoyearsafterNetscapeNavigatorgeneralizedtheinternetfortheworld.13Now,it’sbeenalittleovertwoyearssince

ChatGPT’srelease.OurforayintothisgenerationofAIhasonlyjustbegun,andwithsuchlargestakes,it’svitalenterprisesstartnowbeforethey’releft

irreparablybehind.

Tounderstandmoreabouthowdigital

platforms,data&AI,anddigitalfoundations

areempoweringenterprisestogrowthrough

changeanddisruption,pleaseseeourworkon

ReinventingwiththeDigitalCore

Weareatthestartofsomanypossiblepaths

forward.Thekeytoaccessingthefullpotentialof

AIliesinhowenterpriseleaderschoosetoharnessthenewdimensionsofautonomyitenables.But

succeedinginthisnewworldandmakingtherightchoiceswillbenosmalltask.Intrinsicallymarriedtotheideaofautonomyisanunderpinningoftrust—

andforenterprises,it’strustthatwillbethebiggestbackstoptotomorrow’sgrowth.

TheOnlyLimitisTrust

Thinkabouthowtrustdefinesthehuman

experience—therelationshipbetweenaparent

andchild,forinstance.Wesurroundbabieswith

guardrails.Fromliteralones,likethoseinacrib,

tomorefigurativeoneslikecuttingupfoodor

coveringsharpcornersaroundthehouse.Astheygrowup,welearntotrustthemmore.Theydon’t

needtoholdyourhandtocrossthestreet,butwestillwalknexttothem.Theycanplayoutsideby

themselves,butonlyinsidethefence.Themore

ourtrustgrows,thewiderwepainttheboundariesoftheguardrails.Until,oneday,theyarefully

formedadults.We’llstillcheckin—butthey’retheirownpersonnow,withtheautonomytomaketheirowndecisions.

Critically,thisexampledemonstrateshowtrust

andautonomyareinextricablylinked.Butitalso

demonstratesthenuanceoftrustleadersnowneedtoconsider.Therelationshipbetweenparentsand

childrenhingesonbothemotionalandcognitive

componentsoftrust.Guardrailshelpfosteraloving,nurturing,andsafeenvironment,butalsohelp

parentsbuildtheirownconfidenceinthechild’sdecisionmakingability.Wedon’treallyneedto

differentiatebetweenthesetwodimensionswhenitcomestopeople,butwithtechnologythey

aredifferentchallengeswithdifferentsolutions.

Untilnow,technologysystemshavebeenbroadlyrules-based.Thoughthesesystemsareless

intelligent,theyarehighlypredictableandthus

moretrustable.Asaresult,theiradoptionand

diffusionacrossenterprisesiswidespread.Sonow,aswelookaheadtoaworldthatwillbedefined

bytechnologysystemsthatbothhaveandcreategreaterautonomy,we’relookingatafuturewheretrustisthemostimportantdifferentiatorand

thedeterminingfactortoAIdiffusionwithinan

organization.Afterall,wecanonlyletsystemsbeasautonomousaswetrustthem.

Buttheramificationsofthisarenotasobvious

asyoumightthink.Ofcourse,mostleaderswill

bewellversedonhowbadactorscanspread

misinformationmoreeffectivelythroughdeepfakesorconductmoreconvincingphishingattackswithbetteremailsorspoofedvoicesofrealpeople.

Orhowbiaseddecision-makingcanrearitshead

evenwithAI.Tobeclear,thesearerealissues,withever-growingeffortsforcontentwatermarking

ordeepfakedetectiontoolsurgentlyseeking

resolutionstothem.ButthisnarrativepinstheAI

trustconversationexclusivelyonbadactorsand

exploitation.That’ssimplynotthewholestory.To

achievetrueautonomy—insystems,throughouttheworkforce,andwithcustomers—leadersneedto

thinkabouttrustmoreholistically.Liketheanalogyofguidingachildintoadulthood,trustisabout

theconfidenceonedevelopsinAItoperformas

intendedfromalldimensions—policies,morals,

ethics,andemotions—sothatonecanletitperforminastateofautonomy.Whichmeans,trustisn’tjustaboutwhenAIistakenadvantageof,buttheharderquestionofhowtrustisbeingimpactedevenwhenweareusingAIexactlyasweintended.

Becauseitisimpacted.Tostart—enterprisesneedtorealizethatwithgrowingautonomyintheir

technologysystems,theyneedtothinkdifferentlyabouthowmuchtheytrustthesesystemsand

whatguardrailstheymayneedtoimpose.SakanaAI,anAIresearchfirm,perfectlydemonstrated

whywhiletestingtheirnewsystemcalled“TheAIScientist.”14Thesystemautonomouslyconducts

scientificresearchusingLLMs,andinonerun,wasgivenaproblemitcouldn’tcompletewithinthe

experiment’ssettimelimit,soadjusteditsowncodetogiveitselfmoretime.SakanaAIhaspointedto

thisactascreative,butalsodemonstrativeofthe

factthatanAImodelwiththeabilitytobypassasetconstrainthasmajorimplicationsforAIsafety.

Andbeyondanenterprise'strustintheAImodelsorsystemsituses,growingautonomyisalsodisruptingthetrustenterpriseshavebuiltwithpeople,inalotofdifferentways.

Takethesamesyntheticcontentthatbadactors

use;manyenterprisesareusingthesamecore

technologytogreateffect.AI-generatedmarketingmaterials,chatbotconversations,product

recommendations—theusecasesareever-growing.

ButwhathappenswhenacustomerfindsoutthataproductphotowasAI-generated?Orifthey

believedtheywerespeakingtoacustomerservicerepresentative,onlytolearnitwasanAIagentallalong?Theseinteractionscouldleavecustomers

feelingdupedbythebusiness.

OrlookatAIintheworkforce.Everydaymore

workersarefindingvalueinusingAIintheir

jobs;inMay2024,over40%ofusershadstartedincorporatingitjustinthepastsixmonths.15But

theyarehidingthisfromtheiremployers:morethan

halfofworkersusingAIarereluctanttoadmititandworrythatusingitforimportanttasksmakesthemlookreplaceable.Thisisn’taquestionofhowmuchdoworkerstrusttheAIthey’reusing,ratheritis

proofthatAIisshakingupthetrustedrelationshipbetweenpeopleandtheiremployer.Employees

areusedtohavingwell-developedcareerpaths,

definedroles,skillexpectations,andashared

understandingofhowworkperformancetranslatesintojobstability.TheinfusionofAIisbringing

uncertaintytothis.

Forenterprises,trustisacrucialcurrency

underpinningtheirrelationshipswithcustomers,

employees,regulators,andshareholders.Untilnow,thistrustwasbuiltinsmallmoments—moments

thatAIischanging.Thinkofthemicro-interactionshappeningacrossbusinesseseveryday.Agreat

salesrepsavingcustomersmoney,orasupportrepgoingaboveandbeyondtosolvecustomers’problems.Qualityservicefromapractitioner

orprovider.Callingacustomerforidentity

confirmation.On-timedeliveryofproducts.Everyoneofthesemomentscan,andwill,bedisrupted

withAI.Andmanywillbebetterforit—richwith

moreautonomy,lessfriction,andbetteroutcomes.Buthowfarcanyougobeforetrustbecomesan

issue?Howwillyoureinvigoratethecriticalhumanmomentsthatbuildit?

Thesearetheissuesthatleadersneedtobe

tackling.Autonomyisthekeytothenextgenerationofbusinessgrowthandinnovation.Wewant

employeestobeabletoworkmoreautonomously,

withafleetofagentsattheircommand.We

wantcustomerstobeabletofreelyinteractwithautonomousenterprisesystems,purchasingondemandorenjoyingalevelofcustomizationand

relevancethatonlyAIagentscanprovideatscale.Butthatautonomyneedstobefacilitatedbytrust.

Howmuchcustomerstrusttheenterprise,or

enterpriseleaderstrusttheirsystems,orworkers

trusttheiremployers,howmuchpeopletrustAI,ordozensofotherpermutationsacrosstheecosystemofrelationshipsanenterprisehas.

Thisiswhytrustisnotsimplyoneofmanytrends

inthisyear’sreport.Itisnotaconsiderationfor

businesses—itistheconsideration.Withevery

companybeginningtoreinventthemselveswiththegeneralizationofAI,thetechnologyitselfcannotbetheonlyfocus.ReapingthebenefitsofAIwillonly

bepossiblewhenit’sbuiltonafoundationoftrust,andthisneedstobeeveryleader’sfirstpriority.

PathwaystoaStrongerFoundation

Trustisn’tgoneintheworldofAI—butitis

becomingfarmoredynamicandessentialto

enterpriseplans.WithAI,enterpriseleadersare

goingtoneedtonavigateboththeemotional

andcognitivedimensionsoftrust.Theemotional

dimensions—dopeopleloveAI,fearit,thinkitis

alignedwiththeirinterests,orfeeltakenadvantagebyit—areoftenconsideredpublicly,butwillneed

realpolicyandgovernanceasenterprisesseekto

furtherdiffusethetechnology.Andtheseefforts

willonlybesuccessfulwithcomplementaryactiontakentoaddressthecognitivedimensionsoftrust:Doesasystemactreliably,competently,canit

navigatechallengesandstillactasexpected,withintheguardrailslaidoutforit.Thisisakeyaspectforanysystemoperatingwithautonomy,andespeciallywithAIwhereitis,bynature,onethatwillbereliedontolearn,grow,andactbasedonintent,not

necessarilyexplicitdirection.Supportingthiswill

requirededicatedteamsofdomainanddecision

scientists(orAIOpsteams)whowillconstantly

test,evaluateandbuildtheaccuracy,predictability,consistency,andexplainabilitynecessaryto

maintaincognitivetrustinthesystem.Thisisnew

territory,withnoone-size-fits-allsolution.Every

enterprisehastheirowntrust-buildingmoments,
