couldberiddenataquickpace.Itdidn'tlookmuchlikethemodembicycle,though,becauseitsbackwheelwassubstantially

largerthanitsfrontwheel.AlthoughMacmillan'sbicyclescouldberiddeneasily,theywereneverproducedinlargenumbers.

In1861,FrenchmanPierreMichauxandhisbrotherErnestinventedabicyclewithanimprovedpedalmechanism.They

calledtheirbicycleaVELOCIPEDE,butmostpeoplecalledita"boneshaker"becauseoftheeffectofthewoodandiron

frame.Despite(heimpolitenickname,theVELOCIPEDEwasahit.Afterafewyears,theMichauxfamilywasmaking

hundredsofthemachinesannually,mostlyforfun-seckingyoungpeople.

Tenyearslater,JamesStarlcy.anEnglishinventor,madeseveralinnovationsthatrevolutionizedbicycledesign.Hemade

thefrontwheelmanytimeslargerthanthebackwheel,pulagearonthepedalstomakethebicyclemoreefficient,and

lightenedihewheelsbyusingwirespokes.Althoughthisbicyclewasmuchlighterandlesstiringtoride,itwasstillclumsy,

extremelytop-heavy,andriddenmostlyforentertainment.

Itwasn'tuntil1874thatthefirsttnilymodernbicycleappearedonthescene.InventedbyanotherEnglishman,H.J.

Lawson,thesafetybicyclewouldlookfamiliartotoday'scyclists.Thesafetybicyclehadequal-sizedwheels,whichmadeit

easiertoride.Lawsonalsoattachedachaintothepedalstodrivethebackwheel.By1893.thesafetybicyclehadbeenfurther
