Isnt it natural that taste and smell are the main senses when we enjoy food and drink? Well, perhaps not. “Now we are beginning to understand that flavor depends on parts of the brain that involve not only taste, smell and touch, but vision. These signals, plus our emotions and past experiences, result in perception (感受) of flavors, and decide whether we like or dislike foods.” “Years ago, flavor was a table with two legs taste and odor,” Terry E. Acree, PhD, told National Geographic.A good example of “the first bite is taken with the eye” is that if we were shown two plates of strawberries, one red and the other pinkish, the majority of us would be attracted to red because “it signals ripeness, sweetness and calories”, explained The Guardian. The findings of a German study seem to back this up. Its subjects said wine tasted 50 percent sweeter if drunk under red light, rather than under blue or white. In a study released in midDecember, scientists found that the color of your coffee mug can change the way your coffee tastes, reported The Washington Post. And it is not just the color of the food that matters. Specifically, the white mug was associated with a more “intense” (or bitter) tasting cup of coffee, and the clear glass mug was not. The blue mug, meanwhile, was “kind of an intermediate (中等的)”, Charles Spence, head of the research laboratory at Oxford University, told the newspaper. The opposite was true for perceived sweetness those who took part tasted less sweetness when drinking from the white mug than they did when drinking from both the blue and clear glass mugs. Its also possible that certain colors are associated with certain experiences. In the case of coffee, the researchers believe the color brown might be something people associate with bitterness. “The white mug may have affected the perceived brownness of the coffee and this, in turn, may have affected the perceived intensity (and sweetness) of the coffee,” the researchers wrote.21The passage mainly discusses _.Atasting with eyesBideas about flavorCwine and coffee Dcolors and likes22What does the underlined word “odor” in Paragraph 1 refer to?ATouch. So companies turn to the public, inviting people to lend them money, or take a share in the business in exchange for a share in future profits. They do this by issuing stocks(發(fā)行股票) and shares in the business through The Stock Exchange(證券交易所). By doing so they can put into circulation the savings of individuals and institution, both at home and overseas. When the saver needs his money back,he does not have to go to the company with whom he originally placed it.Instead, he sells his shares to some other saver who is seeking to invest his money.Without hospitals, roads, electricity, telephones, railways, this country could not function. All these require continuous spending on new equipment and new development if they are to serve us properly, requiring more money than is raised through taxes alone. The government, local authorities, and nationalized industries therefore frequently need to borrow money to finance major capital spending, and they, too, come to The Stock Exchange. There is hardly a man or woman in this country whose job or whose standard of living does not depend on the ability of his or her employers to raise money to finance new development. In one way or another this new money must come from the savings of the country. The Stock Exchange exists to provide a channel through which these savings can reach those who need finance.28. Generally speaking, those companies involved in new production and long-term project must_.A. borrow large sums of money from friends and people they knowB. depend on the population as a whole for financeC. ask the banks to lend them moneyD. rely on their own financial resources29. The people are willing to lend money to those companies because those companies _. A. repay them as soon as possibleB. sell the shares in the companies to themC. distribute the future profits to themD. both B and C30. When the savers want their money back they_.A. go to the company with whom they originally placed their money and sell their sharesB. ask another company to obtain their sharesC. put their shares back on the marketD. sell their shares back on the market31. The Stock Exchange exists_.A. to provide for any needy companiesB. to raise money for governments onlyC. because it is useful to new developmentD. because people are rich and have much savingsDIs it possible that the sinking of the Titanic was caused by a ghost? A plot of the story below is true . but did it really happen quite like this? Our story begins not in the icy cold waters of the North Atlantic, but rather thousands of miles away in Egypt. It is here, perhaps, that we can find the start of the mystery (謎) of the Titanic, in the year 1910, in the great city of Cairo. One day, a famous professor of Egyptian history called Douglas Murray was staying in Cairo, when he was contacted by an American adventurer. The American had something unusual to offer Murray, something that was certain to thrill him: a beautiful ancient Egyptian mummy case, containing the mummy of an Egyptian queen. It was over 3,000 years old, but in beautiful condition gold, with bright paintings on it. Murray was delighted with both the object and the askingprice. He gave the man a cheque immediately. The cheque was never cashed. That evening the American adventurer died. For his part, Murray arranged to have the treasure sent back to Britain. However, it was not long before he learnt more about the beautiful mummy case: On the walls of the tomb in which it had been discovered, there were messages which warned of terrible consequences to anyone who broke into the tomb. Murray was disbelieving of these warnings until a few days later, when a gun he was holding exploded in his hand, shattering his arm. The arm had to be cut off. After the accident, Murray decided to return to his homeland. On the return journey, two of his companions died mysteriously, and two servants who had handled the mummy also passed away. The nowterrified Murray decided he would get rid of the cursed case as soon as he arrived in London. A lady he knew named Janet Jones said she would like it, so he gave it to her. Shortly afterwards, Jones mother died, and she herself caught a strange disease. She tried returning the mummy, but naturally Murray refused it. In the end, it was presented to the British Museum.Even in the museum, the mummy apparently continued to cause strange events. A museum photographer died shortly after taking pictures of the new exhibit, and a manager also died for no apparent reason. In the end, the British Museum decided to get rid of the mummy too. They sold it to a collector in New York.At the start of April 1912, arrangements for the transfer were complete, and the mummy began the journey to its new home. But the New Yorker never received the mummy or its case. For when the Titanic sank, one of the objects in its strongroom was the mummy case. Or so they say.32In Paragraph 5, the underlined word “cursed” is closest in meaning to _.AforgottenBuncommonCexpensive Dunlucky33In what order did the following events occur?aThe case was given to the British Museum.bJanet Jones caught a mysterious illness.cMurrays arm was cut off.dThe mummy case was sold to an American.eA man who took a picture of the case died.fWarnings were written on the tombs walls.Af,c,b,a,e,d Bc,f,b,a,e,dCd,f,b,c,a,e Df,a,c,b,e,d34What is the main purpose of this passage?ATo entertain readers with a story of mystery.BTo introduce an important historical event to readers.CTo warn readers about the dangers of mummies curses.DTo inform readers about the true cause of the Titanics sinking.35According to the passage, where is the Egyptian mummy now?AAt the British Museum.
