My daughter told me shed heard something at school a news story about an airport and bombs and people getting killed. We talked a bit about the story shed heard, about how terrible things do happen sometimes, then I promised her that the airplane roaring above wasnt going to harm us.In todays culture with mass media, families are surrounded by stories of shootings, bombings and other violent news. Our kids wont fully understand these stories, but theyll be frightened just the same. As parents, we need to help them have the necessary facts to process these terrible events and a broader understanding to ease their fears.A childs world is pretty small, and kids may think that the terrible news events theyve heard about are just across town or right next door. They might ask if its safe to go to a mall, or as in the case with my daughter, if the airplane roaring overhead is going to attack. Depending on the terrible events, kids may also believe a number of inaccuracies that are spread at school or from conversations with friends. So correct whatever exaggerations (夸張) or inaccuracies they may have heard. One of the first things I talk about with my kids is simple geographic distance. We look at a map or globe and talk about where the terrible events happened and how far away it is from our home.Tell the truth, but dont describe information that will deepen fears. Your goal as a parent is to help your kids feel safe and learn how to handle stress. Children are comforted by the safety their parents provide, knowing that even if bad things happen, the family will get through it together. This creates what scientists call “tolerable (可忍受的) stress”語(yǔ)篇解讀:本文是說(shuō)明文。 1Why was the authors daughter so frightened at the airplane?AThe plane flew very low.BShe never saw an airplane before.CThey live where a war is going on.DShe had heard some terrible news at school. 2What does the author usually do first to reduce his kids fears?AComforting and calming the kids.BTeaching them geographic distance.CGiving them information of the events in detail.DCorrecting exaggerations and inaccuracies about the events. 由第四段“One of the first things I talk about with my kids is simple geographic distance”可知,為了消除孩子的恐懼,作者首先讓他們對(duì)地理位置有清楚的了解。3What can we learn from Paragraph 4?AKids shouldnt talk about terrible events at school.BKids are most fearful of events happening nearby.CExaggerations and inaccuracies deepen kids fears.DKids have a correct idea of geographic distance. 4What would be the best title for the text?AHow to keep kids safe in dangerous situationsBHow to help kids process news of violenceCWhat “tolerable stress” meansDWhy kids get fearful解析:選B標(biāo)題歸納題。 BMore People Are Leaving the Rat Race for the Simple LifeTime is more precious than money for an increasing number of people who are choosing live more with less and liking it.Kay and Charles Giddens, two lawyers, sold their home to start a B & B hotel.
