Section Other Parts of the Module原文呈現(xiàn)Marathon:the Ultimate Olympic EventThe final event in the Olympics is the marathon. It is also usually the most exciting. As the leader comes into the stadium to run the last few metres of the 42kilometre race, the crowd rises to its feet to shout and cheer. The name of the race comes from a battle in Ancient Greece. According to the story, a soldier ran from the scene of the battle, Marathon, to Athens, to bring the news of a Greek victory against the Persians. He died just after arriving.讀文清障ultimate/ltImt/adj. rise to ones feet站起身come from來(lái)源于,來(lái)自于according to根據(jù),由其構(gòu)成的短語(yǔ)在句中作狀語(yǔ)。the scene of the battle戰(zhàn)場(chǎng)victory/vIktri/n. The marathon has been an Olympic event since the modern games started in 1896. At first the distance was 40 kilometres the distance between Marathon and Athens. In 1908, however, at the London Olympics, it was changed. The King of England wanted the runners to leave from his castle in Windsor and arrive in a new stadium in central London. The distance was 26 miles about 42 kilometres. In fact, the 1908 marathon ended dramatically. When the leader, an Italian, entered the stadium he turned the wrong way and fell onto the ground. Officials picked him up and helped him to the finishing line, just as the second runner, an American, entered the stadium. The Americans protested and in the end the American runner was declared the winner. Since then, there have been many more exciting marathons.since引導(dǎo)時(shí)間狀語(yǔ)從句,從句用一般過(guò)去時(shí),主句用現(xiàn)在完成時(shí)。at first首先,起初first of all首先in/at the beginning起初,一開(kāi)始castle n城堡dramatically/drmtIkli/adv.戲劇性地turn the wrong way轉(zhuǎn)錯(cuò)方向pick sb. up扶起某人pick up撿起;接收;學(xué)會(huì);恢復(fù);重新開(kāi)始(曾經(jīng)中斷的工作)the finishing line終點(diǎn)線the starting line起跑線protest/prtest/vi.抗議 /prtest/ n抗議in the end(finally/at last)最后,最終,終于declare/dIkle/vt. exciting/excited的比較級(jí)、最高級(jí)都是在其前加more, most。 In fact, you dont have to wait for the Olympic Games to run or watch a marathon, as there are marathons in over sixty countries and hundreds of cities around the world today. One of the most famous marathons is in New York, and is watched by two million people around the streets and across the bridges of the citys five boroughs, and past New Yorks famous landmarks. But perhaps one of the most beautiful and extraordinary marathons ever is the Great Wall Marathon, which most competitors find is the toughest course to run.The marathon is the final Olympic event because it is thought to be the hardest. At the Olympics, Roger Bannister finished 4th in the 1,500 meters. However, inspired by the intensive training and three gold medals of Emil Zatopek, Bannister decided to make an effort to beat the magical fourminute barrier for the mile.At that time, Bannister was working as a doctor and only had limited time for training. He focused on short intervals, anaerobic training and the use of block training (building up for certain weeks)In 1954, Roger Bannister saw an opportunity at an athletic meeting between Oxford University and Amateur Athletics Association on 6 May. The day was cold, wet and windy and the record attempt was nearly called off. However, at the last moment, the wind died down and Bannister decided to take his chance. He was led out by two pacemakers who led him for the first three laps. Then Bannister made his last effort for the line. Clearly on the edge of tiredness, Bannister almost fainted (暈倒) over the line, before the time keeper read out his time. The seconds were not heard as the 3,000 audiences cheered the historic moment. Six weeks later in Finland, Australian John Landy became the second person to beat the fourminute mile setting a new world record of 3 minutes 57 seconds. However, who remembers the second person to run a subfourminute mile? Bannister held the onemile record for the shortest time. After breaking the record, Bannister concentrated on his medical career and remained modest about his groundbreaking achievement. He also served as Master (院長(zhǎng)) of Pembroke College, Oxford, before retiring in 1993. He later said there was an element of luck in being the first person to break the fourminute mile. It remains one of the great milestones of athletic history. 1What jobs did Sir Roger Bannister do in life?AA doctor, an athlete and a trainer.BAn athlete, a nurse and a teacher.CA doctor, an athlete and the head of a college.DA trainer, a doctor and the head of a college. 2Bannister only had a little time to train himself because _.Ahe had to go to schoolBhe had to work as a teacherChe had to work in the eveningDhe had to serve his patients解析:選D細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第三段中的“At that time, Bannister was working as a doctor and only had limited time for training.” 3What can we learn from Paragraph 5?ABannisters record was hard to break.BJohn Landy had replaced Bannist
