Say, “ hello! Whats your name?” encourage each child to reply in turn, “ my names ( Diana).”l Have a child come to the front of the class. Say, “ this is ( Ben).”l Now say, “ whats his / her name?” elicit, “his / her name is (Ben).” Repeat the procedure with other children and their names.2 use greetings and polite expressionsl ask, “what do you say when you meet your teacher first time in the morning?” tell them that in English we say Good morning. Have the children repeat the expression after you.l Repeat this procedure for the English terms, Good afternoon, Goodbye, Please, Thank you, and Excuse me.l Review the expressions in a class drill by asking the children what English term they need to use when:a. they meet their teacher in the morning / afternoon.b. they leave a friends house.c. they are asking for something.d. someone has given them something or has helped them.e. they need to interrupt someone or have bumped into someone.3 set the scenel in Chinese, ask the children what they are not allowed to do at home, and what things they are not allowed to have.l Ask, “what do your parents say when they think you are going to touch something very hot?” elicit an expression similar to Dont touch. In Chinese. Present the English expression Dont touch.l Repeat the procedure for Dont walk. And Dont move.l Explain that in English we use the words do not or dont before many rules. Tell the children we also say Dont when we dont want someone to do something. Present the expressions Dont cry. And Dont worry.4 talk about the storystudent Book pages 2 and 3have the children open their books at pages 2 and 3. ask these questions about the pictures:picture 1: “ what does the red light mean?”“ what do you think Ken is saying?”picture 2: “ Is it safe for the friends to walk now?”picture 3/ 4: “ what is Mocky doing?”“ what do you think Ann is saying?”picture 5: “ what do you think Ken is saying to Mocky?”picture 6: “ what do you think Mocky is saying to Ken?”picture 7/ 8/ 9: “ what us happening in these pictures?”“ how is Mocky helping Ann?”picture 10: “ what do you think Ann is saying to Mocky?”5 storystudent Book pages 2 and 3l say, “now were going to hear what the characters said.” Play the tape without stopping. Have the children look at the pictures as they listen.l Play the tape again, pausing after each picture. Have the children repeat the words each time.l Demonstrate the meaning of left and right.l Divide the class into three groups to be Ann, Ken, and Mocky. Play the tape again. Have the group join in with the tape when their character speaks.6 words to learnstudent Book page 4l have the children look at the pictures at the top of the page.l Before you play the tape, ask what the diagonal lines through the pictures mean. (they mean something is not allowed.)l Point to each picture in turn and have children explain, in Chinese, what they think the pictures mean.l Play each sentence on the tape one at a time, and have children point to the matching picture.l Play the tape again, stopping after each sentence. Have the children repeat the sentence.l Without the tape, ping to one of the pictures and elicit the matching sentence. Repeat for all the pictures.7 listen to thisstudent Book page 4l have the children look at the six pictures at the bottom of page 4.l Explain that when they hear a sentence on the tape they must match it to the correct picture. Play the tape one sentence at a time, and have the children point to the corresponding picture.l Play the tape again, stopping after each sentence. Now have the class chant the numbers.l Have the children open their books at page 5. play the first three lines of the song several times. Encourage the children to join in by singing, humming or clapping.l Play the rest of the song, two lines at a time, and each time encourage the children to touch the words as they hear them.l Now play the tape from the beginning without stopping. Encourage the children to touch the words as they sing along.l Play the song again. Have the children clap in time as they sing.2 act outstudent Book page 6l review the game Simon says (see page 24). You may need to teach the game to any new students.l Vary the game by giving negative commands such as, “Simon says, Dont open your books.”l Divide the class into two groups and have one group give the command and the other group respond with the correct action. Then have the groups change roles.l Have the children open their books at page 6. draw their attention to the pictures at the top of the page. Show your copy of the page. Read the words in the speech bubbles, pointing to each word as you say it. Read the words again and have the class repeat them after you.l Now substitute different actions. For example, Walk, Dont run.l Now put the children into pairs and have them practise using the structures, Stand up, Dont stand up, Sit down, Dont sit down, Open your book. Encourage the use of the word please.3 left and rightl ask the children to hold up their left hands. Check that they do this correctly.l Write the word left on the board and have the children say it.l Repeat the procedure for the right hand. Give the translation. l Now ask the children to look to the left.l Repeat the procedure for right.l Say, “Simon says, look left. Simon says, look right.”4 listen and numberstudent Book page 6l have the children open their books at page 6. show your copy of the page. Point to each picture in turn and ask what is happening, for example, the girl is running.l Explain to the children that they will hear a sentence on the tape, and they must match it to the correct picture.l Play the tape. Have the children point to the matching picture.l Play the tape again, stopping after each sentence. Explain that you are going to say two words with the letter a in them. One word has a short /a/ sound (bag) and the other word has a long /a/ sound (baby). Ask the children to listen and watch as you model short /a/ and long /a/. ask them to listen for the difference between the two sounds, and then have them repeat the two sounds after you.l Turn to Uncle Bookys ABC at the back of the Student Book and point to the row of /a/ words. Say each word in turn and model the sounds.2 sounds and lettersstudent Book page 8l draw the childrens attention to the top of the page.l Play the tape for apple, bag. Ask, “Do these words have a short /a/ sound or a long /a/ sound?”l Play the tape again and have the children say the words aloud.l Repeat the procedure for the long /a/ words (name, snake, cage, and gate)3 listen for /a/student Book page 8l direct childrens attention to the middle of the page. Show your copy of the page and point to the first row of words. Say that one of the words have a different /a/ sound.l Play the first four words on the tape and have the children point to each word as they hear it.l Play the tape again. Show your copy of the page and point to the first row of words.l Play the tape for the first 5 words. Have the children point to each word that they hear in the tape.l Ask the children if they can find that the letter a in all the words has the same sound.l Tell the children to figure out how to read the last two words.l Play the tape for the last two words and have children read with the tape.l Repeat the procedure for the second row of words.5 model the structuresl pin up the drillcards Dont and Do not. Point to each word as you read the drillcards. Have the children repeat the words. Draw the childrens attention to the contraction.l Choose one child to come to the front of the class. Give him or her the walk drillcard. Say the word walk. Model the action and have the child copy it.l Pin up the walk drillcard to make the sentence Dont walk.l Have the child walk again. This time say, “Dont walk” as you point to the words. Have the child stop. Make sure the class understands the difference between the two commands, Walk and Dont walk.l Repeat the procedure for touch, run, and litter.l Now pin up the No dirllcard. Ask the children to read it aloud.l Pin up the cameras drillcard beside the No drillcard. Say “What does this mean?” elicit the response, No cameras.l Pin the cameras drillcard beside the matching picture flashcard. Read the sentence to the class as you point to the word.l Repeat the procedure with other drillcards.6 Uncle Bookys Blackboardstudent Book page 9l have the children open their books at page 9.l Model the structures on Uncle Bookys Blackboard by reading them to the class.l Have the children repeat the structures in a class drill. Point first to the word Dont. have the children say the word as they touch it in their books.l Now repeat the procedure for No.l Tell the children to look at the picture of the park. Point to grass and say “Dont walk.”l Have them work in groups of 4. put signs of Dont (walk). No (cars). Etc. in the park.l Have children practise the structures. Have one child in a group point to a place in the park and the other children respond with the correct sentence.8 trace and saystudent Book page 10l have the children turn to page 10. show your copy of the page and point to each picture in turn.l For each picture elicit the correct sentence from children. Have the children trace over the sentences.9 think and writestudent Book page 10l have the children turn to page 10 and draw their attentions to the pictures at the bottom. Children should assess themselves according to their own situation. They should be encouraged to compare their results with his / her classmates and learn from each other.l children could work in pairs to do the first activity. One child points to a picture, and the other says the name. The first child checks his / her answer in the box beside each picture. Then they change their roles. Children can also do this part individually.l Have children do the second part individually.
