In the latest issue of Journal Science, Washington State Universitys Diane Cook says it wont be long before our homes act as “intelligent agents” to predict our needs and deal with tasks that improve our health, energy efficiency, even social media. “Many homes are already halfway there, with computer chips helping microwave food, record TV shows, and turn on coffee makers. What were trying to do is get the home to think about what you need as a whole and use different parts to do the right things. ”she says. Cook has been working on smart homes since 2006. Some test homes in Seattle already show that the technology can help monitor the elderly and remind them to complete ordinary activities like rising, eating and taking medicine. Similarly, the home can itself control energy use. Smart home technologies can run washers at off-peak times, turn off unneeded appliances(家用電器)and put out lights in empty rooms. Many communities, including Pullman, are testing the concept of the smart home. While the smartphone lets people take their social media with them, the home could act like a cars Bluetooth, making hands-free conversation from any room a reality and cameras will let the people “talk face to face from anywhere”. Although the technology is available, technologies like in-home cameras raise privacy concerns. The technologies, like many others, face a challenge of being accepted and adopted, says Cook. She has seen that in particular with the elderly participants in her studies. “People will soon understand what these technologies do and see how user-friendly they are. I bet some technologies will develop fast once theyre starting to be used. ”(299W)1. According to the passage, all of the following statements about the smart home technology are TRUE except that. A. it is a completely new conceptB. some tests are being carried outC. it helps improve home managementD. it will soon become a reality2. According to Cook, the smart home technology can benefit. A. the parents monitoring their kids behaviorB. the housewives with babies to attendC. the nurses in the hospital nearbyD. the senior people who need taking care for3. According to Paragraph 4, the smart home technology will help people. A. make more moneyB. use a new form of energyC. improve the energy efficiencyD. develop the sense of saving4. One of the obstacles that prevent the smart home technology from being accepted is. A. the concern about peoples privacyB. the concern about the cost from itC. the concern about the loss of traditionD. the concern about elderly people5. What does Cook think of the smart home technology? A. Useful but much too costly. B. Challenging but promising. C. Convenient and affordable. D. User-friendly and practical. . Many people think a telephone is a necessity. But I think it is a pest(討厭的事物)and a time waste. Very often you find it impossible to escape from it. If you have a telephone in your own house, you will admit that it tends to ring when you least want it to ring; when you are asleep, or in the middle of a meal or a conversation or when you are just going out, or when you are in your bath. Are you strong-minded enough to ignore it? You are not. You think there may be some important news or messages for you. I can assure you that if a message is really important it will reach you sooner or later. Have you ever rushed into crippling from the bath, or chewing from the table, or dazed from the bed, only to be told that you are a wrong number? But you will say, you need not have your name printed in the telephone directory, and you can have a telephone which is only usable for outgoing calls. Besides, you will say, isnt it important to have a telephone in case of sudden emergencyillness, accidents, or fires? Of course, you are right, but here in a thickly populated country like England one is seldom far from a telephone in case of dreadful necessity. I think perhaps I had better try to justify(證明是有理的)myself by trying to prove that what I like is good. I admit that in different circumstancesif I were a wealthy and powerful businessperson, for instance, or badly ill and had to lie in bed, I might find a telephone a necessity. But then if I were a taxi driver I should find a car as a necessity. Let me put it another way: there are two things for which the English seem to show particular talent: one is mechanical invention, the other literature. My own business happens to be with the use of words but I see I must now stop using them, for I have had just been handed a slip of paper to say that somebody is waiting to speak to me on the telephone. I think I had better answer it. After all, one never knows, it may be something important. Title: The(1)_Different(7)_about itMany peopleIt is(2)when one wants to make a call, especially in time of (3).The authorIt can(4)time and even be(5).Not everyone, (6)a businessperson or a sick person who has to stay in bed, needs it.I dont need it because my job is writing.(8)_with itIt always seems to ring when one is doing something else or doesnt want it to ring.Almost(9)can ignore it even if they want to.One(10)to answer it only to find that he or she is misdialed.【語篇隨練】根據(jù)閱讀理解仿寫句子1. in response to為響應;in relation to與有關(guān);in addition to此外;in opposition to與相反。3.【解析】選A。 pull up停車;pull over停到一邊;pull out退出。 If you want a letter, you must keep in mind several rules while. A. written; writtenB. well written; writingC. well writing; writingD. well written; write【解析】選B。 7.【解析】選A。 take back拿回, 撤銷;take on呈現(xiàn), 承擔;take up占據(jù), 從事。9. 10. 【解析】選C。由下文的“you can come to me anytime you like”可知工作日程是非常靈活的。 make allowance for考慮到, 體諒;cater for迎合;account for說明的原因;get around to doing sth. 1. The news that we are having a holiday is not true. 該句中that we are having a holiday為同位語從句, 是對news的補充說明, 而that不作任何語法成分, 只起連接作用。2. The news that we received yesterday was from my father. 該句為定語從句, that we received作定語修飾先行詞news, news作received的賓語, that可以省略。13. 【解析】選D。由下文的“l(fā)et alone a new apartment”, 可知“我買不起新房子”。You must be joking. Are you sure? Dont mention it. 1.【解析】選A。 Many homes are already halfway there
