Gwendolyn Brooks wrote hundreds of poems during her lifetime. She was known around the world for using poetry to increase understanding about black culture in America. Her poems described conditions among the poor, racial inequality and drug use in the black community. She also wrote poems about the struggles of black women. But her skill was more than her ability to write about struggling black people. She was an expert at the language of poetry. She combined traditional European poetry styles with the African American experience. In her early poetry, Gwendolyn Brooks wrote about the South Side of Chicago. The South Side of Chicago is where many back people live. In her poems, the South Side is called Bronzeville. It was A Street in Bronzeville that gained the attention of literary experts in 1945. Critics praised her poetic skill and her powerful descriptions of the black experience during the time. The Bronzeville poems were her first published collection. In 1950, Gwendolyn Brooks became the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. She won the prize for her second book of poems called Annie Allen. Annie Allen is a collection of poetry about the life of a Bronzeville girl as a daughter, a wife and mother. She experiences loneliness, loss, death and being poor. Ms. Brooks said that winning the prize changed her life. Her next work was a novel written in 1953 called Maud Martha, Maud Martha received little notice when it was first published. But now it is considered an important work by some critics. Its main ideas about the difficult life of many women are popular among female writers today. In some of her poems, Gwendolyn Brooks described how what people see in life is affected by who they are. One example is this poem, Corners on the Curing Sky.By the end of the 1960s, Gwendolyn Brookss poetry expanded from the everyday experiences of people in Bronzeville. She wrote about a wider world and dealt with important political issues.24.What does the text mainly talk about?A. The life of Gwendolyn Brooks. B. The struggles of black women.C. They know what theywill get with a wellbranded product or service as promised. Think of Volvo, for instance, and your first thoughts are probably something like “well built, comfortable, Swedish” and, most of all, “safety”.So a brand is a lot more than a logo, icon, or slogan. Catchy as it may sound, it isnt the “brand” in the true senseand it certainly isnt what makes the brand valuable.A companys brand is a promise. Its a description of the companys character. To some extent, its a mission; its how the company creates and delivers value. Also, its the feeling the company conveys to its stakeholders. Successful brands meet various challenges and consistently deliver on their promises, which is how they create brand value. To illustrate it, here are some brand promises from three highly successful, world-wide brands:The NFL: “To be the premier sports and entertainment brand that brings people together, connecting them socially and emotionally like no other.”Coca-Cola: “To inspire moments of optimism and uplift.”VirginAtlantic: “To be genuine, fun, contemporary, and different in everything we do at a reasonable price.”Interesting. In none of the above cases does the brand promise describe what these companies do or provide. The NFLs brand promise says nothing about football. Coca-Cola doesnt talk about providing the best soft drinks in the world. And Virgin Atlantics promise goes a lot farther than seating passengers in its aircrafts.Of course, a promise is nowhere near enough. The promise along with look, personality, time, money, and hard work combined can eventually help to build and maintain great brands and acquire a special patina(光澤) of what I call “me” appeal, showing my personal appetite. Apple has that patina. All of this can lead to sub-brands, like iPhone and iPad which acquire the glory of the parent brand.Sometimes a brand is memorable because of little things. TD Bank has a special place in their branches for you to deposit all those coins you collect in jars. It is called the Penny Arcade that turns depositing your coins into a fun game in which you can even win prizes. Years ago, Dime Savings Bank in New York had a small dime(十分硬幣) carrier. It was given to kids and then theyd fill up its 50 slots (投幣口) with a dime in each one and bring it to exchange for a $5 bill.28.What can we know from the first 2 paragraphs?A. People tend to believe in top brands because they deliverwhat is promised.B. Well branded Swedish products are of good quality but more costly than others.C. Well branded products are faced with great challenges of quality currently.D. A company shouldnt care about logos because they cant make the brand valuable.29.In the authors opinion, a brand promise is _.A. thecontract between a company and the people who interact with itB. the only way to build and maintain a great brands valueC. a description of what a company actually does for its consumersD. an important factor contributing to the success of a brand30.According to the passage, what isprobably “Virgin Atlantic”?A. A financial company.B. A high-tech software product.C. An airline company.D. An entertainment product.31.What can be inferred from the passage?A. Buying a certain brand says nothing about the person who buys it.B. Little things can mean a lot and make a brand memorable.C. Sub-brands are relatively easy to build and generate huge profits.D. Dime Savings Banks dime carriers are difficult for kids to operate.D Gold is one of the rarest materials on Earth and has always been considered a valuable and precious resource. Its very likely that someone in your family owns something made of gold, especially since China is one of the worlds biggest buyers of gold jewellery. Its even in our smartphones - they contain parts made from this expensive material. But where does this beautiful metal actually come from? The answer: outer space. This August, Chinese scientists became the first in the world to witness gravitational waves(引力波)caused by the collision of neutron (中子)stars, reported Xinhua News Agency. The sight was witnessed at Chinas Kunlun Antarctic Station at the South Pole, and Insight, Chinas first X-ray astronomical satellite, also contributed to the discovery.Although collisions of black holes have been recorded before, this was the first time that two neutron stars were known to have collided. Its believed that such collisions lead to huge explosions of energy, and even to the creation of precious metals such as gold and silver.“The collision of neutron stars is like a very large gold factory in the universe,” Jin Zhiping,a researcher at the Purple Mountain Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told Xinhua.According to an article published by , scientists have long believed gold and other materials are created in this way, but it wasnt until the recent collision that their theory was confirmed.“The origin of the really heaviest chemical elements in the universe had confused the scientific community for quite a long time,” Hans-Thomas Janka, a senior scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Germany, said in a news release. “Now, we have the first observational proof for neutron star mergers(合并) as sources.”Indeed, the recently observed collision is thought to have produced an amount of gold that would weigh 10 times more than Earth, according to New ScientistDont expect to be showered in gold any time soon, however. The collision actually took place 130 million years ago, taking all that time for the events light to reach Earth. But at least if you want to see a piece of space up close, all you have to do is to look at the ring on your moms finger - or the smartphone in your pocket.32.Whats the authors purpose of writing the first two paragraphs?A.
