It has the best-known storylines of the American Civil War which broke out in 1861 and however, last for about five years. The novel tells much about the American Civil War, hoping to give the readers a general idea about the backgrounds, thus helping them understand better and analysis the protagonist Characters. With the development of economy, the whole American turned out to be two different kinds of economic systems, the capitalist economy in the North and agricultural economy in the South, before the Civil War. The capitalist economy and industrial production were developing at an amazing speed in the North. Not only the manufacture but also the production Coal and iron were swiftly developed. In order to improve the northern transportation, numbers of canals were dug and innumerable railways were built at a very short time. In spit of machines, a large number of labor forces were also in great need of in the North. At the same time, The South had been focusing its attention on developing agricultural economy instead of its backward industry. The South had thousands of plantations on which they grew cotton and tobacco, and then exported them as raw materials but the southern transportation system was incomplete, so they had many difficulties in transporting and processing with backward industry. However, all of that took a large number of slave labor. Most of Plantation owners had countless slaves in order to make more money. So never would the southern plantation owners give their slave labor. Then, here came the conflicts between the North and the South. What worse, the Atlantic coast, through which goods could be transported to Florida, was ordered to be blockade by American President Lincoln on April 19th. That made more serious conflicts, altogether with the more and more serious works movement and the famous Westward Movement formed the main cause of the American Civil War. By no means could Gone with the wind be awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1937 without the protagonist of the novel, Scarlett OHara, a woman who suffered a lot from the American Civil War and got much from it as well. Scarlett used to live in a rich family who owned many plantations. To most degree, it is the war that made Scarletts develop from a vain, selfish and rebellious brat into a strong hardened, determined and forward-looking young woman. Then we will analyze the protagonist of Gone with the Wind, Scarletts Character according to the novel. The article will be divided into three chapters. We can get a general idea about Scarletts life from the first chapter. The second one will tell some details about her career which we will be impressed by her strong America spirit. Then comes her intricate love affairs.Chapter Two Backgrounds Gone with the wind written by Margaret Michell, is famous for its successful protagonist Scarlett, who is a girl brought up in a rich northern plantation. Affected by her Irish father and her French mother, she has a complex character. She is attention-seeking, charming, tough and determined but at the same time, selfish, plotting, scheming and rebellious. The novel develops along Scarletts complex experiences with her family, friends during the Reconstruction era. Chapter Three Starlets life3.1 family backgroundsScarlett OHara used to be a headstrong and innocent girl, rooted in the southern culture before the American Civil War. She lived in the beautiful and boorish b OHaras plantation which was far away from uproar. Her father, Gerald OHara, was a capable Irish immigrant and her mother, Ellen Rebelled, a demure and well-bred French woman. Scarlett spended her maiden period in a rich family with both her parents and two sisters without sorrow and anxiety. 3.2 The Southern Culture In the south, little attention was paid to womens education. One of their main tasks was to get married and then shoulder the responsibility of taking care of their families. Even though Scarlett was brought up in the southern, she challenged the traditional conventions constantly when she was a young girl. She was good at riding houses, climbing trees and all the other activities. Moreover, she was so self-centered and cared nothing but the parties, hoping to be a permanent center of all of the parties she kept saying:Frankly,my dear,I dont give a damn That was her, a young girl without any sorrow and anxiety.3.3 parents influences In that way, Scarletts vivacious, rebellious and unyielding characters and strong will might be a mixture of both her father, Gerald OHara, who was an energetic Irish immigrant and her demure and well-bred French mother, Ellen Rebelled. Her father once taught her the importance of land:Its proud I am that Im Irish, and dont you be forgetting, Missy, that youre half-Irish, too. And, to anyone with a drop of Irish blood in them.why, the land they live on is like their mother. Oh, but there, there. Now, youre just a child. Itll come to you, this love of the land. You can not get away from it if youre Irish. On the other hand, her mother and careful Mammys successive and garrulous warnings also did a lot good to her. So, they took great efforts to turn Scarlett into a typical woman. All of these efforts work in some extent; she learned to pretend to be a typical lady if it was necessary. She could not get ride of all the rebellious aspects deeply rooted in her nature without genuine inner grace. 3.4 Scarletts later experiencesAccording to the old southern traditional rules, most of girls would have to be arranged to marry someone. Scarletts father insisted that she should get married to one of the Tarlatan twins. Nevertheless then the 16-years-old girls fall in love with her neighbor, Ashley Wilkes, an aristocratic young man. But Ashley Wilkes announced his engagement to mild-mannered Melanie Hamilton at the barbecue; she decided to get married to Charles Hamilton, Melanies brother, out of spite. Soon the American Civil War broke out, so Ashley and her new husband had to join in the war and fight against enemies. Unfortunately, her husband died within two months because of serious measles. All that means she suddenly became a woman after the war break out and a widow two month later. As to the war, the Yankee army made its way to Georgia. They spared her home, but stole the livestock and food. Whats worse, her mother died of Typhoid fever and other family numbers were seriously ill at that time. There was no way for Scarlett but fled nearby Atlanta where she had to with Melanie during the war, hoping to get to Tara to reunite her family. With the help of the opportunistic Rhett Butler, a man who had been found of her since they met each other at the barbecue and hall at the Twelve Oaks. Time and at last became her third husband, she survived the war after overcoming a lot of difficulties and finally arrived at Tara laboriously. Only to find that her home was almost in ruins and her family members were barely surviving. All of a sudden, she realized she lost all the love and was thrown into a strange and cruel world with nothing to eat. Knowing that she would suffer a lot from what the war had brought about, a poor and damaged family, she swore that she would try all kinds of ways to get her and her family though difficulties and never be hungry again:If I have to lie, steal, cheat or kill, as God as my witness, Ill never be hungry again! Now I find myself in a world which for me is worse than death. A world in which there is no place for me. Ultimately, the war was end up with the southern inevitable failure. While all the southern were crying bitterly, Scarlett was thinking about how to save the OHaras plantation. Extremely helpless as she was, she walked out her boudoir and managed to go into business by herself thought women were not allowed to do so at that time. Poverty was so terrible that Scarlett tried all her could to make a living and feed the family including cajoling her sister fianc, Frank Kennedy. During all these things, Rhett Butler kept paying much attention to Scarlett, and tried to do her a fever if it was necessary. When she found they could not afford the extra taxes, she asked Ashley for advice, but he could do nothing but sighing. She thought of Rhett Butler, a tricky speculater. More importantly, she knew that he was a little fond of her. Then she could make full use of this to get some money. Poor as she was, she pretended to be a well-bred lady to seduce him. She would be willing to get married to him or to be his mistress, if he could give her enough money to pay the taxes on. But when Rhett Butler realized that Scarlett just wanted to get money from him to pay the taxes on instead of caring about him sincerely, he refused to give her a hand. However, Scarlett found Frank Kennedy was rich enough to help her get through, so she tried to cajole him without hesitation. And she did it. At last the not-so-grieving widow married the man she did not love at all in order to get some financial help to save the familys beloved home. Meanwhile Scarlett had been busy with working on the farm with her sisters and engaging in business deals all by herself. in spite of other people s dissuasion and objection, she decided to marry Rhett Butler having experiencing a lot. After that, she got great financial satisfaction from her new husband. Soon she gave birth to a beautiful girl. Rhett Butler devoted most of his attention to bringing up their daughter. Unfortunately, the girl died when she tried to hurdles. Regardless of doctors advice, Melanie Hamilton scarified her life trying to give another baby. But she failed. It seemed that Ashley lost everything after she died, and more scared than Scarlett. All of a sudden, Scarlett realized that she did not love Ashley actually. It was just because he was not as addicted to her as the others. But it was too late, Rhett totally lost hope for her. He had determined to leave their home as well as Scarlett. As for Scarlett, all the lights of life disappeared. But she did not give up:“Ill think of it all tomorrow, at Tara. I can stand it then. Tomorrow, Ill think of some way to get him back. After all, tomorrow is another day.”( Margaret, 1973: 36 p.644)Chapter four make a living 4.1 Before the war Never had Scarlett worried about how to make a living when she was a young girl, living with her parents. What she cared about was parties and beautiful clothes. 4.2 During the warWith the help of Rhett,Scarlett got home eventually. The war was terrible. The most important thing was to get some food to eat, so Scarlett tried to find something on her own instead of just depending on her two younger sisters who are lazy and thin. Even their three slaves said they were not experienced in working on the farm. Having realistically realized that poverty was really terrible, she made up her mind to make a living by all kinds of means:If I have to lie, steal, cheat or kill, as God as my witness, Ill never be hungry again! Now I find myself in a world which for me is worse than death. A world in which there is no place for me.All of these troubles made her as cold as marble. As a result, every of the family numbers were afraid of her. 4.3 After the warEventually, the war came to an end and the north was defeated with no doubt. The war left nothing behind but a damaged hometown, week family numbers and as more as ten people to feed up. In face of sufferings, Scarlett thought of what her father had told her before:“Land is the only thing in the world that amounts to anything,” he shouted, his thick, short arms making wide gestures of indignation, “for tis the only thing in this world that lasts, and dont you be forgetting it! This is the only thing worth working for, worth fighting forworth dying for.” (Margaret, 1973: 36 p.22)That was what her father taught her and also what she did after that. While, Scarlett had determined to recover what the OHaras plantation used to be: beautiful clothes, delicious food and numbers of slaves picking cotton on the farm. When they were on the danger of losing the OHaras plantation because of extra taxes, she asked Ashley for advice, cheated Rhett Butler and cajoled her sister fianc, Frank Kennedy, who was her second husband. As for Scarlett, the war developed her practical nature which led to a determination to step on anyone and anything that prevented her to obtain her familys best interests, including her own sister. Fortunately, Scarletts efforts paid off. Things seemed better after she saved the OHaras plantation by getting married to Frank Kennedy。But that was not enough, what she wanted was to recover the OHaras plantation as what it used to be. Thanks to Scarletts great talents for business and strong career ambitions, she insisted that she would do it. When the war came to an end, Scarlett took chances to engage in business deals as men did. She challenged the nineteenth-century prescribed societys gender roles repeatedly, running a store and two lumber mills at one time. As a result, she turned out to be a capable and experienced business woman. Scarletts flexible way of work and life met the societys need during the rebuilding period. She stood out for her stick-at-itiveness and export talents.Scarlett was reputed to be the epitome of American sprits, which encouraged people to straggle in difficulties and pursue their independence as well as dignity. She has been accepted and admired by more and more women since Gone with the wind was published. Scarletts enduring charm for them, to most degree, is her proto-feminism and sturdy determination. However, everything has two sides. Influenced much by the war, she proved to be selfish, despicable and ruthless. Capture five intricate love affairs5.1 Three marriages Depict the fact that Scarlett did very well in her career, her marriages were not smooth at all: she got married for three times. Instead of aiming at true love, all of her three marriages were with ulterior motives. She became a widow when she was a very young girl. Her third husband, Rhett Butler, brought her wealth and deep love, but she was so busy with making use of him that she did not realize all of that until she was in danger of losing him. The sufferings she got thought during the war turned her into a plotting and scheming woman, as a result, she did all the tings with ulterior motives so it was with her marriages. She treated them as means to get what she wanted. Finally, she did not get true meaning of life until she was 28 years old. 5.2 Addicted to Ashley WilkesShe was hopelessly addicted to her neighbor, Ashley Wilkes, an aristocratic young man who had come back after studying abroad for years. Having discovered the engagement, Scarlett was anguished, but she realized that Ashley was not aware of that she was totally in love with him, so she decided to tell him that she loved him directly:Whatever comes, Ill love you, just as I do now. Until I die.In spite of you and me and the whole silly world going to pieces around us, I love you.Nevertheless, Ashley was too timid to accept Scarletts bold love even though he was found of her. After being refused euphemistically, she planed to make Ashley jealous by cajoling the boys in love with her at the barbecue at the Wilkes plantation of Twelve Oaks.5.4 Her true love with Rhett Butler While Scarlett was so addicted to Ashley Wilkes, Rhett Butler, who had been into her at the same time, did not get away from her even it was the terrible war. He had witnessed all the things she did and he thought that there were very similar with each other. Most importantly, he was deeply attracted by her courage and energy. So he was always willing to give her a hand
