Oh, if I could only 32 the poor people down there! she thought, They look so worriedand tired. If I could but make their work 33 , or give the hungry food or the thirsty a drink. People change. But what if we could travel to the past and experience our old memories again? Lexa Hillyers first novel, Proof of Forever, deals with common topics in young adult literature such as friendships, relationships and self-discovery, but is filled with surprises. So it is different from other novels. The main characters, four seventeen-year-old girlsJoy, Tali, Luce and Zoe promised to be best friends forever. But, like many friends, they grew away from one another as their interests changed. They hardly speak. After Joy asks the friends to get together before they leave for college, a photo booth camera (機(jī)器拍照亭) moves the girls around two years back in time to their last summer at camp. The summer will change them forever again. The main part of the novel is set in the past. The four girls are troubled by the absurdity(荒謬) of their time-traveling failure. With one week of camp left, they finally realize they have to recreate their last summer together to return to the present day. They must learn to work together, or serious problems may happen. Along the way, the girls learn that the past doesnt necessarily repeat itselfIts filled with new memories and discoveries. The main characters are very different from one another, leading to a lot of interesting, humorous moments. Proof of Forever is not a common story about friendship. Many of its plots(情節(jié)), such as losing trust in a parent and finding out ones secrets, are very exciting. While the storyline might interest younger readers, it is most suitable for readers 15 and older. Because of its many plots and four main characters, the story is sometimes difficult to follow. The storyline jumps from character to character and from problem to problem, resulting in an interesting but confusing story. The ending is very surprising. The storyline takes an unexpected twist(轉(zhuǎn)折) that may even result in a few tears. However, the ending needlessly leaves a few questions unanswered and some problems to deal with. Proof of Forever is a good read, telling the ups and downs of coming of age and the power of friendship in an honest way.49. The novel Proof of Forever is different from others because .A. it includes some common topicsB. is is Lexa Hillyers first novelC. it gives readers many surprisesD. it brings back readers old memories50. What happens when the girls get together?A. They promise to be best friends forever.B. They talk about their last summer camp.C. They move the photo booth camera away.D. They have a time-travelling to the past.51. What must the girls do to avoid serious problems?A. Work as a team.B. Change their interests.C. Trust their parents.D. Repeat their past life.52. What can we learn from the passage?A. The success of the novel depends on its ending.B. The girls suffer a lot but rebuild their friendship.C. Memories of the past bring trouble to the girls life.D. Young readers love the novel because of its simple plots.D We cant control everything that happens to us. We cant control where our families came from, how much we will pay for school next fall, or how others might treat us. But there is one thing we can control: how we respond(回應(yīng)) to what happens to us. And that is what counts! This is why we need to stop worrying about things we cant control and start worrying about things we can. Look at the picture. The inner circle is our circle of control. It includes things we have control overourselves, our personality, our choices, and our response to whatever happens to us. Outside the circle of control is the circle of no control. It includes the thousands of things we cant do anything about. Now, what will happen if we spend our time and energy worrying about things we cant control, like a rude comment(評(píng)價(jià)), a past mistake, or the fact that its raining on a good hair day? You guessed it! Well feel even more out of control, as if we were hurt. For example, if your sister is angry with you and youre always complaining(抱怨) about her weakness, that wont do anything to fix the problem. Itll only cause you to blame(責(zé)備) your problems on her and lose power yourself. Dont listen to the rude comment, avoid making the mistake next time, and get an umbrella for the rain. You are the star of your own life. Focus(關(guān)注) on what you can influence. Renatha told me a story that explains this point. A week before her upcoming volleyball game, she learned that the mother of a player on the other team had made fun of Renathas volleyball skills. Instead of paying no attention to the comments, Renatha became angry and spent the rest of the week thinking about it. When the game arrived, her only goal was to show to this woman that she was a good player. To make a long story short, Renatha played poorly, spent much of her time on the bench, and her team lost the game. She was so focused on something she couldnt control that she lost control to the only thing she could controlherself. Proactive(積極的) people focus on the things they can control. By doing so they experience inner peace and are primed for whatever comes their way. They learn to live with the many things they cant do anything about, even to smile and laugh about them. They may not like them, but they know its no use worrying.53. Why did Renatha play poorly?A. Because she was thinking about her mistakes.B. Because she was made fun of during the match.C. Because she was overtired after the hard training.D. Because she cared too much about others comments.54. What does the underlined part are primed for probably mean in the last paragraph?A. care forB. wait forC. are ready forD. are sorry for55. What is probably the best title of the passage?A. Out of Control, out of DateB. We Can Control Only One ThingC. The Circle of No ControlD. We Must Learn How to Control五、短文7選5(5選5等)(共5小題;共10分) Water is wonderful. 56. We drink it, cook with it, wash with it, and swim in it. We use it to grow food and to flush(沖洗) the toilet. Its easy to get water and we never think about where we get it. We simply turn on the water and its there. But for many people in the world, its a different story. More than one billion people (thats about one in six of all the people living on Earth) are not able to get clean water. And over 2.4 billion people dont have flush toilets. 57. Because of the polluted water, six thousand children die every day. Surprisingly, only 2.5% of all the water on Earth is freshwater, in rivers, lakes and underground. 58. And almost more than half of the freshwater is frozen in ice at the north and south poles. So, as less than 1% of the worlds freshwater is usable for us, its really important that we take care of it!59. So it made 2003 the International Year of Freshwater. It asked countries around the world to work together that year, and beyond, to make sure there is enough freshwater for everyone on the planet. But its not only the government that can make a difference. We all can, by remembering to use water wisely. 60. Do your part to help the United Nations achieve its goal!A. We use it every day.B. Give it a try, everybody!C. The rest 97.5% of it is salty, in the sea.D. Many of the worlds rivers and lakes are polluted.E. The United Nations decided to help take care of our water.六、閱讀與表達(dá)(問(wèn)答式)(共5小題;共10分) When people speak about the Chinese womens volleyball team, they dont just talk about a sporting group.
