2、c engineering, using a process of either cisgenesis or transgenesis. Genetically modified foods were first put on the market in the early 1990s. Typically, genetically modified foods are transgenic plant products: soybean, corn, canola, and cotton seed oil.Last year, the Department of Agriculture aw

3、arded the safety certificate to two kinds of transgenic rice, and this triggered a large-scale discussion. Many people opposed it and refused to eat genetically modified foods. They objected to genetically modified foods on several grounds such as: genetically modified foods have not been a success,

4、 there is no test in human being; genetically modified foods maybe change human genes in future; genetically modified foods will affect other plants around them and change other species, then more and more species will vary or disappear; genetically modified foods have the advantage in both price an

5、d output so that few companies who have transgene proprietary technology will control food market.According to a recent survey of students opinion towards genetically modified foods here in Walton High School, almost 90 percent of them believe that the genetically modified food is not safe to their

6、health and refuse to purchase. But the funniest thing is almost 85% of them show lack of understanding how the genetically modified food possibly damage their health. People are deeply misunderstood and even have repellent psychology because of the long-time negative public opinion.People eat geneti

7、cally modified foods, then the foods are absorbed like normal foods, there is no theory to support that genetically modified foods will change human beings genes. Actually, more and more genetically modified foods appear in our lives. When you have dinner in the restaurant, maybe you eat the genetic

8、ally modified oil and genetically modified corn and genetically modified rice, but you just dont know. Do you want to see a world with hungers? There is a severe food supply issue in the developing world where we will either thrive or die, in order to meet the demand for food and confronting the cli

9、mate change we need to increase use of genetically modified crops. It is science which brings us the only solution. Now with less and less cultivated land area, genetically modified food will play a more and more important role if the use of transgenic technology can solve the world food shortage pr

10、oblem.The genetically modified crops use less pesticide which is safer than normal crops. Farmers have witnessed the advantages of genetically modified crops firsthand through increases in their yields and profit, and decreases in their labor, energy consumption, pesticide use and greenhouse gas emi

11、ssions. Farmers growing genetically modified rice in field trials in China report higher crop yields, reduced pesticide use and fewer pesticide related health problems. According to a study by researchers in China and by the University of California, Davis measures on a per hectare basis that the qu

12、antity and cost of pesticides applied to the conventional rice was 8 to 10 times as high as that applied to the insect-resistant genetically modified rice.Genetically modified food in the world now is a new thing; a new thing people need time for people to promote its acceptance. Science and technol

13、ogy is a double-edged sword which implies even the perfection has its disadvantages. Genetically modified food and nutrition inside are not harmful to people but the same healthy as natural foods. The spread of peoples worries is understandable. It takes time to accept a new thing; ultimately we wil

14、l see the benefits of it. “All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self- evident,” as Arthur Schopenhauer would say. Of course, in our country, the new grain law imposes some more rigorous rule. For example, the g

15、enetically modified organisms research, experiments, productions, sales, imports and exports should be followed to the countrys laws, and every individual person and unit are not allowed to imply genetically modified technology at principle grain cultivars without authorization. We should give our r

16、efrigerator and trust to genetically modified foods.You can take the biotechnology out of the country but you cannot take the country out of the biotechnology. I strongly believe that biotechnology is an essential part of the toolbox to feed the world sustainably in the future.
