4、entary school.children would make halloween decorations, all kinds oforange-paper jack-o-lanterns. and from black paper youd cutscary designs -an evil witch with a pointed hat ridingthrough the sky on a broomstick, maybe with black bats flyingacross the moon, and that meant bad luck. and of course b

5、lackcats for more bad luck. sometimes a black cat would ride awayinto the sky on the back of the witchs broom.and on halloween night wed dress up in mom or dads oldshoes and clothes, put on a mask, and be ready to go outside.the little kids (children younger than we were) had to gowith their mothers

6、, but we older ones went together toneighbors houses, ringing their doorbell and yelling, trickor treat! meaning, give us a treat (something to eat) orwell play a trick on you! the people inside were supposedto come to the door and comment on our costumes.oh! heres a ghost. oh, theres a witch. oh, h

7、eres anold lady.sometimes they would play along with us and pretend tobe scared by some ghost or witch. but they would always havesome candy and maybe an apple to put in our trick or treatbags. but what if no one come to the door, or if someonechased us away? then wed play a trick on them, usuallyta

8、king a piece of soap and make marks on their windows. .andafterwards we would go home and count who got the most candy.one popular teen-agers halloween trick was to unroll a rollof toilet paper and throw it high into a tree again and againuntil the tree was all wrapped in the white paper. the paperw

9、ould often stay in the tree for weeks until a heavy snow orrain washed it off. no real harm done, but it made a big messof both the tree and the yard under it. one kind of halloweenmischief.注釋:1. was stingy with :對 吝嗇。 stingy這個(gè)詞你可不要去模仿,因?yàn)樗恰傲邌莸摹币馑?,要不你可要成為“葛朗臺”了!但你可要注意 stinggy這個(gè)形容詞詞是和介詞with連用的呀!2. ca

10、rrying a lantern :拿著燈籠。這里用 carrying 作 walk的伴隨狀語,更生動地說明可憐的 jack 無論走到哪里手里都要提著燈籠了。好累呀!3. neighbors houses :鄰居的屋子。 neighbors 本身已經(jīng)是復(fù)數(shù),有一個(gè)“ s”了。如果表示“鄰居的”,就不能加“ s ”(太累贅),而要直接加“ ”了。所以就是 neighbors houses 。4. come to the door :應(yīng)門?!白叩介T前面”自然就是要來開門看看是哪些小調(diào)皮在搗亂啦!5. unroll a roll of toilet paper :打開一卷紙。這么多 roll ,可別

11、怵!roll 是“卷、卷起”的意思, a roll of toilet paper 是一卷手紙;unroll 則是 roll (卷起)的反義詞“打開”的意思,所以就是“打開一卷手紙”了!萬圣節(jié)關(guān)于萬圣節(jié)有這樣一個(gè)故事。是說有一個(gè)叫杰克的愛爾蘭人,因?yàn)樗麑﹀X特別吝嗇,就不允許他進(jìn)入天堂,而被打入地獄。但是在那里他老是捉弄魔鬼撒旦,所以被踢出地獄,罰他提著燈籠永遠(yuǎn)在人世里行走。在十月三十一日愛爾蘭的孩子們用土豆和羅卜制作“杰克的燈籠”,他們把中間挖掉、表面上打洞并在里邊點(diǎn)上蠟燭。為村里慶祝督伊德神的萬圣節(jié),孩子們提著這種燈籠挨家挨戶乞討食物。這種燈籠的愛爾蘭名字是“拿燈籠的杰克”或者“杰克的燈籠”
