The brain-wasti ng disease has no cure. The pla n in cludes more
2、 efforts to develop drugs to preve nt it. In the United States, more than five million people have Alzheimers or some other form of dementia. As the population gets older, the number is expected to reach almost eight million by 2030. By then, experts say Alzheimers and other dementia disorders could
3、 affect as many as sixty-six millio n people worldwide. The n ati onal Alzheimers pla n calls on scie ntists to develop treatme nts to preve nt the disease by 2025. Officials at the National Institutes of Health have promised fifty million dollars to help support that effort. NIH held a conference o
4、f the nation s top Alzheimers researchers where NIH Director Fran cis Colli ns discussed the pla n. We have lear ned more about this disease in the last couple of years tha n probably ever before. And now the goal is to take that andranslate it into interventions. Early next year, scie ntists at the
5、 Banner Alzheimers In stitute in Arizona pla n to beg in huma n testi ng of an experime ntal drug. The drug is called cren ezumab, and the hope is it will preve nt Alzheimers. The study will involve members of a large extended family living in villages in the Medelli n area in Colombia. Some of the
6、family members have a rare gen etic disorder that causes them to get early-on set Alzheimers. They beg in to show sig ns of men tal loss in their mid-forties and fully develop the disease by their early fifties. Three hundred people have agreed to be in the study. One-third of them will receive cren
7、 ezumab. The others will be give n a placebo, a pill that does not contain any drug. They will not know if they have bee n give n the drug or the placebo. The study will also include a smaller number of people in the United States. Pierre Tariot will help lead the study, known as a human trial. He s
8、ays all of the people have bee n in formed that the drug might not work or that they might receive a placebo. Mr. Tariot says the people still wan ted to be in the study. They have been faced with this devastating illness hitting every generation for hundreds of years. As one of them put it, There a
9、re many rivers to cross but at least were at the first bank. And thats kind of the attitude that people have had.” Scie ntists hope that if the drug works in those facing early-on set Alzheimers, the n it might also help older people. The study in Colombia could take as long as five years, but resea

However, epidemiological studies have proposed relati on ships betwee n certa in modifiable factors such as diet, cardiovascular risk, pharmaceutical products, or in tellectual activities among ot
14、hers, and a populations likelihood of developing AD. Only further research, including clinical trials, will reveal whether these factors can help to prevent AD. 5. Omitted.
