17、 difficult. at the beginning of the term, he was struggling to keep up with his classmates. so i was very pleased that at the end of this term, zhao xing came top of his class. all areas have improved greatly. in his writing, his spelling and punctuation are much better. he is able to correct his ow

18、n work and help correct other pupils. in speaking, he is much more confident. he can have english conversations with his friends and with me. he takes part in group work and he is not afraid to speak anymore. he is able to read and understand quite difficult texts much more easily. when i ask him qu

28、re hard to learn. english spelling is even harder- and people in the usa and england spell a lot of words differently. english spelling has rules. but it also has lots of words that break the rules. you have to learn each of these words. now text messaging has made spelling even harder.text messages

29、 have to fit onto a small mobile phone screen. the job of text messages is to say as much as possible with as few letters as possible. it is a whole new language. most teenagers do not use much punctuation. here are some examples:“ill see you later and well go shopping” becomes “c u ltr 2 shop”. “co

33、at we call los angeles. so i will tell you about los angeles now. you can tell me about oxford when you write back.la is one of the biggest cities in california. there are about 10,000,000 people here. we learned in school last week that in 1900 there were only 100,000 people here. so it has grown f

34、ast. it is mostly sunny here. it gets very hot in the summer-up to 28°c. it doesn't get much colder than 9°c. in summer we often get a thick smog because of all the petrol fumes from the cars. the heat, the way the land lies and the way the wind blow all make it worse. some people even

35、 wear masks on bad days because they don't want to breathe it in. do you have smog in oxford?eric6. ben in oxfordhi eric,we dont have smog in oxford. we get fog sometimes, but thats all. oxford is much smaller than la. we only have about 135,000 people. i looked up the 1900 population, it was ab

36、out 57,000. so it is about twice as many people, not ten times as many, like la! oxford is much smaller than london - london has about 7,000,000 people. so that means that la has more people than london. la gets hotter than oxford. we have colder winters too it can be -4°c in winter.im not surp

37、rised that your new student only knew about the university. it is famous because it is one of the oldest universities in the country. the university dates from the 12th century. now there are about 9,400 students in residence, of whom a third are women. the city of oxford is popular with tourists be

38、cause of the universitys many beautiful medieval buildings. there are more tourists in oxford than students, i should think. we get a lot of tourists, all year round. we also get a lot of young foreign students because there are a lot of language schools here. you can stand in the middle of oxford,

39、close your eyes, and hear accents from all over the world!ben7. postcardsdear eric,here is a postcard from paris. we came here at half term for a holiday. we went to disneyland. id like to see the disneyland in california one day. im speaking french because mum and dad have forgotten the french they

42、 me while i was on another ride with my cousins!maybe you will come to stay with me one day. we will go to disneyland and go on all the fast rides!eric 8. the flying scotsmaneric liddell was known as the flying scotsman because he ran so fast. but he is most remembered as a man of honor and bravery.

43、eric was born in 1902 to scottish parents. they were living in tianjin, north china. in chinese, he was known as li airui(李愛銳). eric lived in china until the age of five. after that his parents sent him to school in england. in 1920, eric went to the university of edinburgh to study science.sports p

44、layed a large part in his life and he became the fastest runner in scotland. he was chosen to be part of britains 1924 olympic team. the games were in paris. the 100-meter race was his best event, but it was to be held on a sunday. eric, a strong christian, refused to run on sundays because he belie

45、ved that it should be a day of rest as the bible teaches.although many people told him to run the race, he refused. instead he started to train for other distances. at the olympics he won a bronze medal in the 200-meter race and then a gold medal in the 400-meter race, setting a world record. this s

46、tory is told in the award-winning 1981 movie chariots of fire. though now famous in scotland, eric still loved and remembered china. he wanted to go back to the country where he was born. in 1925, he went to china and worked as a middle school teacher in tianjin. then he went to hebei province to he

47、lp the poor people there.after the japanese invaded(入侵)china, eric chose to stay. he wanted to help the sick and give hope to the chinese people. in 1943, the japanese sent him to a prison camp in weifang. even in the camp, he continued to help the old people. he also arranged games for the children

48、, and taught them science.in 1945, eric was very ill. he was given a chance to leave the camp but he refused. instead he gave this chance to a pregnant woman. this inspiring man died six months before the end of the war. many people still remember his service to the chinese people of that area.9. dr

49、ama in the 3000 metresthe crowd fell silent as the starter called the competitors in the mens 3000 metres to the starting line. as the athletes were moving to their marks, all eyes were on two runners mark, the favourite for the gold medal, and a newcomer to the athletic world, jim.mark was very exp

50、erienced and was thought by many to be the finest 3000 metres runner in the country. until a few months before, jim was almost unknown outside his hometown. but, he had amazed athletics fans by leaving his opponents far behind him at one athletics meeting after another. many people thought jim would

51、 do very well to finish second or even third. it was going to be an exciting race!the starter raised his pistol. bang! the race had started. for the first half, jim ran with mark in the leading group. at the 1700 metre mark, jim was leading with mark in second place about a metre behind. suddenly th

52、e crowds, who had been cheering, fell silent. mark had fallen and crashed onto the grass on the side of the track. he tried to get up, but he had been injured and was out of the race.the crowd believed that jim was responsible for tripping mark and they began to shout insults at him. jim looked back

53、, slowed his pace, then went on with the race. but the race was over for jim too, he slowly dropped back and finished in seventh place. jim was very upset by what had happened.later, after the judges had studied the video of the race, they decided that jim had not been to blame. jim went to see mark
