6、sellers since it was published in 1936.It has the best-known storylines ofthe American Civil Warwhich broke out in 1861 and however, last for about five years. The novel tells much about the American Civil War, hoping to give the readers a general idea about the backgrounds, thus helping them unders
7、tand better and analysis theprotagonistCharacters.With the development of economy, the whole American turned out to be two different kinds of economic systems, the capitalist economy in the North and agricultural economy in the South, before the Civil War. The capitalist economy and industrial produ
8、ction were developing at an amazing speed in the North. Not only the manufacturebut also the production Coal and iron were swiftly developed. In order to improve the northern transportation, numbers of canals were dug and innumerablerailways were built at a very short time. In spit of machines, a la
9、rge number of labor forces were also in great need of in the North. At the same time, The South had been focusing its attention on developing agricultural economy instead of its backward industry. The South had thousands of plantations on which they grew cotton and tobacco, and thenexported them as
10、raw materials but the southern transportation system was incomplete, so they had many difficulties in transporting and processing with backward industry. However, all of that took a large number of slave labor. Most of Plantation owners had countless slaves in order to make more money. So never woul
11、d the southern plantation owners givetheir slave labor. Then, here came the conflicts between the North and the South. What worse, the Atlantic coast, through which goods could be transported to Florida, was ordered to be blockade by American President Lincoln on April 19th. That made more serious c
12、onflicts, altogether with the more and more serious works movement and the famous Westward Movement formed the main cause of the American Civil War. By no means could Gone with the windbe awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1937 without the protagonist of the novel, Scarlett OHara, a woman who suffered a
13、lot from the American Civil War and got much from it as well.Scarlettused to live in a rich family who owned manyplantations. To most degree, it is the war that made Scarletts develop from a vain, selfish and rebellious brat into a strong hardened, determinedandforward-looking young woman. Then we w
14、ill analyzethe protagonist of Gone with the Wind, Scarletts Character according to the novel. The article will be divided into three chapters. We can get a general idea about Scarletts life from the first chapter. The second one will tell some details about her career which we will be impressed by h
15、er strong America spirit. Then comes her intricate love affairs.ChapterTwo BackgroundsGone with the wind written by Margaret Michell, is famous for its successfulprotagonistScarlett, who is a girl brought up in a rich northern plantation. Affected by her Irishfather and herFrench mother, she has a c
16、omplex character. She is attention-seeking, charming, toughand determined but at the same time, selfish, plotting, scheming and rebellious. The novel develops along Scarletts complex experiences with her family, friendsduring the Reconstruction era.Chapter Three Starlets life3.1 family backgroundsSc
17、arlett OHara used to be a headstrong and innocent girl, rooted in the southern culture before the American Civil War. She lived in the beautiful and boorish b OHaras plantation which was far away from uproar. Her father, Gerald O'Hara, was acapableIrish immigrant and her mother, Ellen Rebelled,
18、a demureand well-bredFrench woman.Scarlett spended hermaiden period in a rich family with both her parents and two sisterswithout sorrow and anxiety. 3.2 The Southern CultureIn the south, little attention was paid to womens education. One of their main tasks was to get married and then shoulder the
19、responsibility of taking care of their families. Even though Scarlett was brought up in the southern, she challenged the traditional conventions constantly when she was a young girl. She was good at riding houses, climbing trees and all the other activities. Moreover,she was so self-centered and car
20、ed nothing but the parties, hoping to be a permanent center of all of the partiesshekept saying:Frankly,my dear,I dont give a damnThat was her, a young girlwithout any sorrow and anxiety.3.3 parentsinfluencesIn that way, Scarletts vivacious,rebellious and unyieldingcharactersand strong will might be
21、 amixture of both her father, Gerald O'Hara, who was anenergetic Irish immigrant and her demure and well-bredFrench mother, Ellen Rebelled. Her father once taught her the importance of land:It's proud I am that I'm Irish, and don't you be forgetting, Missy, that you're half-Irish
22、, too. And, to anyone with a drop of Irish blood in them.why, the land they live on is like their mother. Oh, but there, there. Now, you're just a child. It'll come to you, this love of the land. You can not getaway from it if you're Irish. On the other hand, her mother and careful Mammy
23、s successiveand garrulous warnings also did a lot good to her.So, they took great efforts to turnScarlettinto a typicalwoman. All of these efforts work in some extent; she learned to pretend to be a typical lady if it was necessary. She could not get ride of all the rebellious aspects deeply rooted
24、in her nature without genuine inner grace. 3.4 Scarletts later experiencesAccording to the old southern traditional rules, most of girls would have to be arranged to marry someone. Scarletts father insisted that she should get married to one of the Tarlatan twins.Neverthelessthen the 16-years-old gi
25、rls fall in love with her neighbor, Ashley Wilkes,anaristocratic young man.But Ashley Wilkes announced his engagement to mild-mannered Melanie Hamilton at the barbecue;she decided to get married to Charles Hamilton, Melanie's brother, out of spite. Soon the American Civil War broke out, so Ashle
26、y andher new husband had to join in the war and fight against enemies. Unfortunately, her husband died within two months because of serious measles. Allthat means she suddenly became a woman after the war break out and a widow two month later. As to the war, the Yankee army made its way to Georgia.
27、Theysparedher home, but stole thelivestock and food. Whats worse, her mother died of Typhoid fever and other family numbers were seriously ill at that time. There was no way for Scarlettbut flednearby Atlanta where she had to with Melanie during the war, hoping to get to Tara toreunite her family. W
28、ith the help of the opportunistic Rhett Butler, a man who had been found of her since they met each other at the barbecue and hall at the Twelve Oaks.Time and at last became her third husband, she survived the war after overcoming a lot of difficulties and finallyarrived at Taralaboriously. Only to
29、find that her home was almost in ruins and her family members werebarely surviving. All of a sudden, she realized she lost all the love and was thrown into a strange and cruel world with nothing to eat. Knowing that she would suffer a lot from what the war had brought about, a poor and damaged famil
30、y, she swore that she would try all kinds of ways to get her and her family though difficulties and never be hungry again:If I have to lie, steal, cheat or kill, as God as my witness, Ill never be hungry again! Now I find myself in a world which for me is worse than death. A world in which there is
31、no place for me.Ultimately, the war was end up with thesouthern inevitable failure. While all thesouthern were crying bitterly, Scarlett was thinking about how to save the OHaras plantation. Extremely helpless as she was, she walked out her boudoir and managed to go into business by herself thought
32、women were not allowed to do so at that time. Poverty was so terrible that Scarlett tried all her could to make a living and feed the family includingcajoling her sisterfiancé, Frank Kennedy. During all these things, Rhett Butlerkept paying much attention to Scarlett, and tried to do her a feve
33、r if it was necessary. When she found they could not afford the extra taxes, she asked Ashley for advice, but he could do nothing but sighing. She thought of Rhett Butler, a tricky speculater. More importantly, she knew that he was a little fond of her. Then she could make full use of this to get so
34、me money. Poor as she was, she pretended to be a well-bred lady to seduce him. She would be willing to get married to him or to be his mistress, if he could give her enough money to pay the taxes on. But when Rhett Butlerrealized that Scarlettjust wanted to get money from him to pay the taxes on ins
35、tead of caring about him sincerely, he refused to give her a hand. However,Scarlett found Frank Kennedywas rich enough to help her get through, so she tried to cajole him without hesitation.And she did it. At last the not-so-grieving widow marriedthe man she did not love at all in order to get some
36、financial help to save the family's beloved home.Meanwhile Scarlett had been busy with working on the farm with her sisters and engaging in business deals all by herself. in spite of other peoples dissuasion and objection, she decided to marry Rhett Butler having experiencing a lot. After that,
37、she got great financialsatisfaction from her new husband. Soon she gave birth to a beautiful girl. Rhett Butler devoted most of his attention to bringing up their daughter. Unfortunately, the girl died when she tried to hurdles. Regardless of doctors advice, Melanie Hamilton scarified her life tryin
38、g to give another baby. But she failed. It seemed that Ashley lost everything after she died, and more scared than Scarlett. All of a sudden, Scarlett realized that she did not love Ashley actually. It was just because he was not as addicted to her as the others. But it was too late, Rhett totally l
39、ost hope for her. He had determined to leave their home as well as Scarlett. As for Scarlett, all the lights of life disappeared. But she did not give up:“Ill think of it all tomorrow, at Tara. I can stand it then. Tomorrow, Ill think of some way to get him back. After all, tomorrow is another day.”
40、( Margaret, 1973: 36 p.644)Chapter four make a living4.1 Before the war Never had Scarlett worried about how to make a living when she was a young girl, living with her parents. What she cared about was parties and beautiful clothes. 4.2 During the warWith the help of Rhett,Scarlett got home eventua
41、lly. The war was terrible. The most important thing was to get some food to eat, so Scarlett tried to find something on her own instead of justdepending on her two younger sisters who are lazy and thin. Even their three slaves said they were not experienced in working on the farm. Having realistical
42、lyrealized that poverty was reallyterrible, she made up her mind to make a living by all kinds of means:If I have to lie, steal, cheat or kill, as God as my witness, Ill never be hungry again! Now I find myself in a world which for me is worse than death. A world in which there is no place for me.Al
43、l of these troubles made her as cold as marble. As a result, every of the family numbers were afraid of her. 4.3 After the warEventually, the war came to an end and the north was defeated with no doubt. The war left nothing behind but a damaged hometown, week family numbers and as more as ten people
44、 to feed up. In face of sufferings, Scarlett thought of what her father had told her before:“Land is the only thing in the world that amounts to anything,” he shouted, his thick, short arms making wide gestures of indignation, “for tis the only thing in this world that lasts, and dont you be forgett
45、ing it! This is the only thing worth working for, worth fighting forworth dying for.”(Margaret, 1973: 36 p.22)That was what her father taught her and also what she did after that. While, Scarlett had determined to recover what the OHaras plantation used to be: beautiful clothes, delicious food and n
46、umbers of slaves picking cotton on the farm. When they were on the danger of losing the OHaras plantation because of extra taxes, she asked Ashley for advice, cheated Rhett Butler and cajoled her sisterfiancé, Frank Kennedy, who was her second husband.As for Scarlett, the war developed her prac
47、tical nature which led to a determinationto step on anyone and anything thatprevented her to obtainher family's best interests, including her own sister.Fortunately, Scarletts efforts paid off. Things seemed better after she saved the OHaras plantation by getting married to Frank Kennedy。But tha
48、t was not enough, what she wanted was to recover the OHaras plantation as what it used to be. Thanks to Scarletts great talents for business and strong career ambitions, she insisted that she would do it. When the war came to an end, Scarlett took chances to engage in business deals as men did.She c
49、hallenged thenineteenth-century prescribed society's gender roles repeatedly, running a store and two lumber mills at one time.As a result, she turned out to be a capable and experienced business woman. Scarletts flexible way of work and life met the societys need during the rebuilding period. S
50、he stood out for her stick-at-itiveness and export talents.Scarlett was reputed to be the epitome of Americansprits, which encouraged people to straggle in difficulties and pursue their independence as well as dignity. She has been accepted and admired by more and more women since Gone with the wind
51、 was published. Scarlett's enduring charm for them, to most degree, is her proto-feminism andsturdydetermination. However, everything has two sides. Influenced much by the war, she proved to be selfish, despicable and ruthless.Capture five intricate love affairs5.1 ThreemarriagesDepict the fact

53、 and deep love, but she was so busy with making use of him that she did not realize all of that until she was in danger of losing him.The sufferings she got thought during the war turned her into a plotting and scheming woman, as a result, she did all the tings with ulterior motives so it was with h
54、er marriages. She treated them as means to get what she wanted. Finally, she did not get true meaning of life until she was 28 years old.5.2 Addicted to Ashley WilkesShe was hopelessly addicted to her neighbor, Ashley Wilkes,anaristocratic young man who had come back after studying abroad for years.
55、 Having discovered the engagement, Scarlett was anguished, but she realized that Ashley was not aware of that she was totally in love with him, so she decided to tell him that she loved him directly:Whatever comes, Ill love you, just as I do now. Until I die.In spite of you and me and the whole sill
56、y world going to pieces around us, I love you.Nevertheless, Ashley was too timid to accept Scarletts bold love even though he was found of her. 57、lve Oaks.5.4 Her true love with Rhett ButlerWhile Scarlett was so addicted to Ashley Wilkes, Rhett Butler, who had been into herat the same time, did not get away from her even it was the terrible war. He had witnessed all the things she did and he thought that there were very similar with each other. Most importantly, he was
