And thank you for interviewing me. Conversation TwoM: Hello, everyone! Today, English teacher Nina Weinstein is

15、 back to talk about some ways to sound less formal in a casual conversation. Nina, please. W: Well, generally speaking, whenever we have the chance to use a two-word verb, that is kind of an instant way to sound more informal and more natural. M: Why dont you give a couple of examples? W: “Get toget

16、her”: “Lets get together for a meeting this weekend” rather than “Lets meet this weekend. And we say, “Lets set upa meeting” rather than “Lets arrange a meeting.” M: So “get together” instead of “meet”, “set up” instead of “arrange”. Adding one word kind of softens them a little bit. W: Right, it ma

17、kes it more informal. We also say “Im tied up next week” rather than “Im busy next week”. Busy, we have many, many ways to say “Im busy”, “I have a lot on my plate,” “I have a million things to do,” “I have a ton of paperwork.” So all of these very colorful idioms sound more like a native speaker, m

18、ore informal and more natural. M: Although actually, just going back to the word “busy” for a second, I mean that doesnt sound too bad if you say “Im busy next week.” You could say “Im tied up,” but. W: You can say “Im busy”. But if thats the only way you can say it, it makes your vocabulary sound a

19、s if its pretty limited. M: Well, is there any difference between “Im busy” and “Im tied up”? W: Well, “Im tied up” - thats much different than “Im busy.” Theres a meaning that I cannot change whatever it is Im doing. For instance, if you call a company and you ask for Mr. Jones and they say “Im sor

20、ry, hes tied up in a meeting,” the implied meaning is that you cannot interrupt him. We dont want to just say “Im busy” because then it doesnt carry that implication. M: So weve talked about sounding more natural. But as you point out, theres something else traditionally important when talking to Am

21、ericans - that is, making eye contact. W: In some cultures its not considered polite to look in the persons eyes when theyre talking to you. But in our culture, if you dont make eye contact and look at their eyes when theyre talking, the speaker might feel that youre bored or youre not listening. An

22、d so this is really important. Or, in business, they might not feel like youre telling the truth. M: If youre looking away? W: If youre looking away. Exactly. A researcher says lead in the environment could be a major cause of violence by young people. Doctor Herbert

31、Needleman is a professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in Pennsylvania and he presented his findings at the yearly meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Doctor Needleman says the presence of lead in the brain changes the neurons that control actions

32、 and that can cause a person to act in antisocial and criminal ways. In the 1970s, Doctor Needleman found lower scores on intelligence tests even in children who did not have such signs of lead poisoning. After that, lead was removed from gasoline and paint in the United States. Yet many homes still

33、 have old lead paint. Lead was also used in older water pipes. In fact, officials just announced stronger testing and reporting requirements as from next year for lead in American drinking water. The newest research shows that even very small amounts of lead in bones can affect brain development. A

34、simple blood test can measure lead except that an X-ray process is needed to measure levels in bone. In 2004, such tests were done on 190 young people who were in jail and the findings showed that their average levels were higher than normal. And, in 1998, three hundred children were studied and the

35、 test scores showed higher levels of aggression and learning problems in those with increased levels of lead.
