2、raditionalmodeofteachingforseveralyears,InowwouldliketohelpimproveteachinginChinabyintroducingnewandmoreeffectiveinstructionaltechnologyandmediaintothecountry.Forthat,Iwouldliketopursueanadvanceddegreeineducationinyourcountry.NowanEnglishteacheratthetrainingcenteroftheChinaNationalContainerCorporati

3、on,Igraduatedin1995fromtheCapitalUniversityofEconomicsandBusinessinBeijing,whereImajoredinbusinesslaw.Atthishighlyrespectedhigher-learninginstitution,Ireceivedbroadtrainingthatwasbothrigorousandvigorous.Afterfouryearsofundergraduatestudies,thestronglogicinherentinlawtranslatedintostronglogicinmythin

4、king.WiththeknowledgeandskillsIattainedinthelawprogram,IboastthekindofintellectualmaturitythatwouldhelpmewhateverIdo.Butlawwasnevermyfirstchoiceforaprofession.Startingfrommyhighschooldays,Ialwaysdreamedofbecomingateacher.Inthesecondyearofhighschool,weoncehadtowriteanessayonthetopic“whatdoyouwanttodo

5、whenyougrowup”.Iproudlywrote,“Iwanttobeateacher!”ButmyparentsshatteredmydreambyinsistingthatIpursueanotherprofession.Myfather,anengineerwithaPh.D.degree,andmymother,auniversityteacherofEnglish,hadtheirreasons.Chineseteachers,particularlythoseteachingattheprimaryandsecondarylevels,arepoorlypaidandbeg

6、rudginglyrespected.Beingyoungandinexperiencedintheworld,IaccededtotheirwisheswhenIwaschoosingmymajorfortheuniversity.Butmypassionforteachingwasnottobestifledforever.Giveranyopportunity,itwouldburstout.UpongraduationwithanLL.B.Degree,IfirsttookupthepositionofasupervisorwiththeChinaNationalContainerCo

7、rporationinchargeofitsOverseasSalesDepartment.AsthejobentailedfrequenttranslationandinterpretationbetweenChineseandEnglish,IpersistedinimprovingmyEnglishproficiencybyattendingvarioustrainingcoursesandlearningitonmyown.Mycommandoftheforeigntonguebecamesogoodthat,afteraboutoneyear,Ibegantoteachittomyc

8、olleaguesonafull-timebasisatthecompanystrainingcenter.Afterahugedetour,mycareerfinallygotbackontrack.Whatmakesteachingsoenjoyabletomeisthatitisalearningexperience.Ienjoyitthemostwhenmystudentsaskdifficultquestions,particularlyquestionsthatIhavetothinklongandhardtoanswer.Ialsoenjoyposingquestionstost

9、udents,butmyquestionsareneverintendedtointimidatethestudentsoreventesttheirknowledgebutratherdesignedtostimulatetheirminds.Intheconstantexchangeofquestionsandanswers,studentsandteachersimprovethemselvesaliketothecreditoftheoldChinesesaying:Toteachistolearn.Inmythreeyearsofteaching,Ireallyhavelearned

10、agreatdeal.OneofthethingsIhavelearnedistheabilitytonotonlydealwithbutalsostrikeanaccordwithpeopleofdifferentbackgrounds.Mystudentsatthetrainingcenterarealladultsaccomplishedinavarietyofrolesandprofessions.Inmostcases,theyareolderthanIam.WhileIstandastheirequals,Ihaveservedastheirmentorsandrolemodels

11、thesamewayasmostteachersdotheirstudents.Bysodoing,IhavewontheirtrustandconfidenceinwhatIteach,whichhashelpedtomakemyteachingpowerfulandeffective.Totakefulladvantageofmyteachingskills,IstartedinOctober1996toteachEnglishandothersubjectsattheprimaryschoolIattendedwhenIwasachild.AsthechildrenIteachareat

12、theagewhenIstudiedhere,Iamparticularlysensitivetotheirneedsandappreciativeoftheirpotential.Togetherwithotherteachers,Idesignedvarioustrainingprogramsincalligraphy,art,writing,mentalcalculation,andEnglish,programsthatcombinelearningwithentertainment.Thekidsnmyclassarenowlearningmoreandfasterthankstot

13、hefuntheyfindeverydayinmyprograms.Entertainmentis,however,bynomeansjustaployIusetosweetenthebitterpilloflearningforthechildren,butratherhasitsownintrinsicvalue.Whilekidscanhardlylearnwellwithoutbeingabletohavefun,thelackoffunhurtsmorethanthekidsabilitytolearn.Itcanimpairthekidsemotionalandpsychologi

14、calhealthtoanextentthatnoamountofknowledgeandskillsdrabteachingforce-feedsintothemcanmakeup.Entertainmentisthereforepartandparcelofwhatweteachershavetoprovidetochildrenifwearetohelpthemgrowupintoproductivemembersofthesociety.ThewayIseeentertainment,itshouldbeconsideredanendineducation.AsChinaseducat

15、ionisorientedoverwhelminglytowardshelpingkidspassexams,entertainmentisabouttheleastonthemindofanaverageteacherorprincipal.Intherushtoproducesuperkidsasmeasuredbythegradesoutofexams,thepurposeofeducationislostalltoooften.Thecurriculumislimitedtosubjectscoveredbymandatoryexams.Studentsareseldomencoura

16、gedtocomeupwithoriginalideas.Interactionbetweenteachersandstudentsiskeptataminimumintheclassroom.Theteacherscompetetoheaphomeworkonthestudents,asdotheparents.Whileeverybodyistiredtodeath,fewkidsgetarmedwiththeabilitytotakeinitiativesorsolvereal-worldproblems.Itishightimethatfreshapproacheswerebrough

17、tin.OneofthewaystomakeachangetotheChineseclassroomistoutilizenewtechnologiesandmediaofteaching.SchoolauthoritiesinChina,asthoseelsewhere,increasinglyrealizetheimportanceofcomputerization,andmanyofthebetter-offschoolsinChinaarealreadystackedwithstate-of-the-artcomputers.Butreportssayonlyatinyfraction

18、ofthosecomputersareadequatelyutilized.Thesituationwithothereducationaltechnologiesandmediaisnobetter.Theyareeitherabsentfromtheschoolsittingorvastlyunder-used.FewChineseteachershaveacquiredtheknow-howorthedrivetomakeuseofthesemodernfacilities.IthereforewouldliketopursuefirstamastersdegreeandthenaPh.D.degreeininstructionaltechnologyandmediaintheUnitedStates,wheretheuseofmoderneducationalfacilitiesisundoubtedlythemostadvancedintheworld.JudgingbytheinformationIhaveculledfromyou
