1、Explanation of the Teaching DesignLinxin Peng The analysis of students. After two years of studying, students have mastered the basic structures of sentences and an abundant vocabulary. Basically they wont have many problems understanding the content. The passage tells a story of a left-behind boy,
2、Li Wen. Students are familiar with the topic which is often mentioned in students reading materials. Even some students in the class dont live with their parents to get better education in Nanchong. So this is a topic close to childrens life. On the other hand, the communication between children and
3、 parents has been discussed a lot before. So students have observed the phenomena and also have had their own opinions.The analysis of the teaching materialBased on a left-behind childs perspective, the passage tells after his parents worked in the city, he felt lonely and unhappy, therefore became
4、less interested in study and even wanted to leave the school. But after hr talked with his parents, they finally understood each other and now he studies better than he used to. The structure of the passage is based on the structure of storiesthe beginning, the build up, the climax, the resolution,
5、and the ending. So students should comprehend the story according to the structure. The first purpose of the passage is to lead students to care about the situation of the left-behind children. Although some students live with their parents, they may not give each other enough care, or they lack of
6、the skills of communicating, so they may have some problems in their communication. Thus the second purpose is to make students realize the importance of communication which is really needed in many families in modern society. So the teacher hopes that after reading the passage, students can realize
7、 the importance of communication and actively deal with problems in their life through communication.Step 1 Lead in Show Step 1 Lead in Show the picture of a young student. Tell Ss that the boy is Li Wen. Hes a 15-year-old boy whose parents are working in the city. 2. Ask some Ss guess the problems
8、the boy might have. Pre-readingStudents need to predict what problems the boy might have according to the picture, the title and some given information based on their common sense. They can predict that Li Wen might have problems in study and the relation with his parents. The first problem is obvio
9、us and the main clue of the passage. Students can find it easily. But the second is less obvious and also important for students to understand the reason why the boy had those problems. Through the guess, students can pay more attention to the second problem while reading.Step 2 Reading Step 2 Readi
10、ng Fast Reading1.Ask Ss to read the passage quickly and check if their guess is right. At the same time, ask Ss to put the sentences into the correct places in the passage according the context.2.Check the answers with the class. ScanningStudents need to read fast to check if their guess is right an
11、d also they need to put the sentences into the correct places of the passage. The ability object in this class is to train students to guess the meanings of new words using sentence context. When students put sentences into the passage, they need to analyze the sentence context, which is also a prac
12、tice of the ability. Meanwhile, students can learn the basic structure of the passage.Careful ReadingCareful ReadingAsk Ss to read paragraph 1 to find out the Li Wens differences before and after his parents moved to the city.Show Ss the reading skill of using context. Ask them to read paragraph 2 c

15、en step by step and how his feelings influenced his study. Also in this part, students will use the skill of using context to guessing the meanings of the words in bold in the second paragraph. With the help of students, the teacher will finish the mind map of the boys emotional changes on the black
16、board. According to the mind map, students can retell the story by themselves. And they will also get a conclusion that the communication helped Li Wen and his parents to solve their problems. Students should realize that communication is also very useful in many other aspects in our life. On the other hand, although the story ends with a happy ending, we can still
19、 find some problems that caused the relation between Li Wen and his parents to get worse and worse. When students scan those problems, they will realize what will help improve the relation between children and parents. Although students will come up some ideas based on their common sense, whether th
20、e suggestions will work or not is not sure. To make students realize that these suggestions are helpful, the teacher will play a video in which a girl told her mother truthfully that she wanted her to accompany her more often. And her mother explained why she couldnt always stay with her and gave a
21、resolution which was accepted by the girl. This is an example to show students that sometimes communication can help them to solve problems successfullyStep 3 Homework:Step 3 Homework:Imagine you are Li Wens parents, and draw a mind map like the one on the blackboard. Then write a short story to tell your son Li Wens story.It can be observed that students come up with suggestions in their shoes. They will say
